The boy acquired a singularly horrified expression as he stared at Shadi.
"I don't think he wants me," she said. "And anyway, I already have a very pretty man. It was just an observation! I'm not a total slut. Anyway, I can try to get rid of him, if you want."

"Be my guest," said Nadir, gesturing to Edward. "Just don't hurt yourself."

Shadi grinned at Nadir and sashayed up towards Edward, a bright glint in her green eyes. For his part, Edward looked very much like he wanted to fall back to a safer position, as if she was waving a knife in his face.
She fixed in her mind, in succession, most of the memories she had of Nadir. Which included their own accidental marriage, Nadir's flagrante with Erik, and several exciting and far too informative shouting matches. Her smile was broad and delighted, while Edward's face went through a surprisingly mobile transformation from disbelief to disgust to despair.

He couldn't believe what he was seeing.
It was easy to tell between manufactured images and actual memories, when you had the practice he did. And everything she was showing him--manipulative little witch!--was true. He felt sick to his stomach and looked ready to vomit.
What sort of horrible influence did she have over him? She wasn't a vampire--she smelled human--but surely something was wrong with her, to give her this power. And Nadir Khan doted on her, that much was obvious. Well, other than the exceedingly dysfunctional argument he'd overheard, which he did not doubt was the girl's fault.
"Oh my god," he gasped. "What is wrong with you?"
He cast a desperate gaze at Nadir, who still smelled divine, and fiercely repressed how the borrowed vision of Nadir's golden body aroused feelings other than hunger.

Nadir began to chuckle, though he tried to hide it.
"That's my girl...whatever you're doing...I think it's working."

Shadi shot a grin at him, that urchin's smile all grown up and all the more devilish for it, somehow.

Edward looked like he was about to cry.
"She's... you... got married?" he gasped finally. "That's... that's..."
He turned to Shadi.
"You're a filthy-minded little girl," he said.
"Oh, and what are you?" the chit shot back. "You're the same age as me."
"I'm 108," Edward snapped, "I'm a vampire, and I'd dearly love to eat your father, as his blood smells of falafel, brandy and jasmine. But I'm not going to, and I'm certainly not interested in his... your... sordid treatment of him!"

Nadir rolled his eyes.
"Years ago, and it was a mistake, and it's since been rectified!" he protested. "Edward, what part of GO away don't you understand, as long as it's not in Farsi?"

Edward cast Nadir a despairing look, one that might move a man of stone to pity. Or something else.
"I'd have been gone ages ago, if the sun..." He glanced out. Night had fallen. "Right," he said. "Er... Forget you ever saw me! You will, in time."
He turned to leap through the window. He'd forget, too... In a hundred years, perhaps.

Nadir felt a twinge as Edward left...he was relieved, but somehow felt more alone than ever. He shrugged off the strange feeling. Of course he was alone. He was always alone. He always drove everyone away.

Shadi, oddly perceptive as she was, didn't pick up on Nadir's twinge. Instead, she frowned after the departing boy.
"Weird," she said. "He doesn't even think he wants you. He just can't help himself."
She shrugged, as if the idea of someone wanting her dad wasn't that big a deal, and it wasn't.
"Well. I should go. Rochester's waiting. And I don't actually want think about what you smelling like falafel means."

Nadir tried to discreetly sniff at his underarms.
"...I have no idea," he said absently.
"Anyway," he shook his head. "Go. Enjoy yourself. Um."

Shadi was at her father's side in a moment with a tight, but quick, hug.
"This was fun," she said with an astonishing level of obliviousness. "We should do it again sometime."

Nadir smiled softly, absently rubbing at a sudden tightness in his chest.
"Yes..." he said. "Well, if the boy ever comes creeping back, I'll let you know."

"Oh, do," she said. "I enjoyed that. Poor thing." She pouted. "You are quite the catch."
With that, she grinned and made her way to the door. In the back of her mind, she recalled that this was not exactly the drubbing she'd planned, but maybe it'd all work out in the end.
