*Lark was eager enough to have something to focus on that didn't involve being the newcomer and followed suit, shutting her eyes and lacing her fingers in her lap.*

"Fer what we're 'bout t'receive, may the Lord make us truly thankful. Amen," *muttered Jake awkwardly after a moment, as if just realizing that Pa was no longer there to lead them and so it fell to him.*

Alex found herself having to curb many of her instincts--she'd been a man for some time, and it was natural for her to be solicitous to Lizzie. Which would look decidedly strange at this point.
The family was loud and boisterous and not at all the way Alex had grown up--but far closer to how she felt inside. The difference had a part in why she'd left home (though the scullery maid and the arranged marriage had had a bigger part).
She bowed her head for grace, simply spoken by Jake, and looked forward to falling to, glancing frequently at Lizzie.

"Amen." *Lark whispered softly, her gaze lingering on her lap for a moment. She was thankful. For this. For him. She dared a quick glance up to him with a tender smile.*

"A'men." *Lizzie answered, quickly looking to the food.*
"Right...'ya servin', Jake or should I?" *She grinned, truly happy. She was surrounded by all the people she cared about and there was food to share. It didn't get much better.*

"You better, Liz," *said Jake, picking up the carving fork and knife and handing them to his sister.*
"I c'n butcher 'em but I can't make 'em turn out so pretty an' tasty as you can."

"Uh huh..." *Lizzie answered knowingly, as if the compliment was also because it meant less work for him. But she smiled nevertheless as she set to cutting, serving up a goodly serving for each plate.*

Alex grinned at the byplay between brother and sister and accepted her portion, waiting until everyone was served to begin eating. Some manners were ingrained.
When she started, her eyes sought Lizzie.
"Excellent," she said appreciatively. "What a wondrous land this Texas must be."

"The best place an' th' best people. I tell ya Miz Alexandra--ya'd be a lucky woman t'git either ah these two lowlifes t'court ya," *he said, gesturing to Jamie and Kip, who p'shawed and chuckled.* "Even if they're the worst o'th' Quinns, they're still Texans, an' that's sayin' somethin'," *he teased.*

Alex kept her expression even as she returned, in like fashion, "I take it, then, that the best of the Quinns is already taken?"
She did not look at Lizzie, of course.

*Lizzie snorted and grinned between Jake and Alex.*
"Damn right. And back in Texas." *She was just poking fun. Big meal like this with all the family, old and new...it put her at ease. Made it feel like home.*

*Lark just took the opportunity to give Jake's leg a soft, supportive squeeze. She knew it was probably not a great topic for her to get involved in, but she couldn't help it.*
"I've found all the Quinns to be sweet as pie. Very hospitable."
*She glanced to Jake briefly, the offered a respectful nod and warm smile in Kip's direction.*

"Damn straight, Liz--Justus 's worth ten 'o any of us...an' that includes you, sis."
*He grinned at Lark, then his siblings.*
"'Sides--truth be told, I'm prob'ly the worst catch. Y'all share full-blood relations, anyhow. I'm just yer half-brother, an' a right failure inna th' bargain."
*Somehow his joking tone didn't manage to pull it off, and the vague truth to what he had said darkened the mood at the table a little bit.*

Alex's genuine smile began to feel a bit fixed as family drama seemed to surface, things she wasn't privy to and had no place commenting upon. Even if she was curious. Such a large family! She wondered if she could keep them straight.

((Not Lizzie at any rate. *bu-da-ching*))
*Something was wrong. And it wasn't just the nervousness one would expect at something like this. But she wasn't about to try to get to the bottom of it while trying to make a good impression.*
"You're just fine by me." *Lark answered with a supportive smile. No matter what is was, she was there for him. After all, how bad could it be?*
