"Oh yes, yes, that'd probably be good" he set her down and winked at Marie who pulled Hazel along to the bathroom to clean up while John began to cook.

Hazel smiled and scampered across the room with Marie to clean up, then she went back to John again.
"Do you need any help, Papa?"

"Just go around with Marie and take count of the people here and tell them that dinner will be done in an hour."

Hazel smiled and waited for Marie. She was still a bit shy about strangers, so it felt safe to have Marie there.

As soon as they finished counting Marie pulled Hazel back toward the kitchen "Fourty three!" She yelled happily.
"Wow" John smiled "that's quite a bit, it's a good thing I started five pots of soup" he moved out of the way of the stove to show five large pots simmering at the same temperature. It was hard to do it by himself, his wife had been the cook, not him, but he had learned a few things from her, so it was all right.
"How'd you two like to help me?"

Hazel looked up at John. It couldn't be easy for him, handling all those pots by himself. Just like the other girls in Leclerk's orphanage, she too had been used as a workslave. She had spent a lot of time in the kitchen, preparing food she was never allowed to eat herself. She had no idea how many times she had been burned by the stove, just because she wasn't tall enough to stand in front of the pots. Since she arrived at the shelter, she had not worked as hard or as dangerous as she had used to, so now she didn't get burn marks anymore.
"What do you want me to do, Papa?"

"I'd like you and Marie to take the dishes cart and set up the dining room, that is if you two don't mind" he winked and Marie rolled her eyes.
"Of course not Papa, come on Hazel."

John whistled while he cooked, it had been an all around fulfilling day, although the appearance of the Leclerk character dampened the mood for a short bit, but other than that it was good.
A hour or so later the food was finished and he wheeled all of the soup pots out in to the dining room where it was almost full.
He smiled and began filling up the bowls.

"You can go sit down and wait for dinner" he laughed, kissing her on the forehead.
"She called you Papa" a disheveled looking old man remarked as he watched the girl scamper away "I thought Marie only called you Papa."
John looked down at the man as he filled his bowl "She was an orphan" the man nodded knowingly and took his spoon.

Hazel smiled and kissed John back, before sitting down next to Marie. When she heard the dishevled looking man commenting on her calling John Papa, she blushed and looked down, as if she thought she had done something wrong.

Marie giggled "Papa's so good" she whispered "I'm sure he'd take in ever homeless person and every orphan in the world if he could, yup, I bet he would."
