"Well, in that case, let me know what you have by 5 today. If you need anything else well...you know where I am."
*Smecker gave a wry grin and took a seat, opening up the next casefile that had been piled in his inbox.*

"Yes, sir," *she said, leaving the office, grinning.*
Ooooh baby. Reference books. Ledgers. Records.
*She was in heaven.*

*Smecker watched her go briefly, studying her enthusiasm before turning back to his work.*

*Without looking up, Smecker waved her in.*
"What you got?"
*He arched a brow, but didn't look up. And of course he noticed she'd managed to show up early.*

"No record of the daughter in any city census taken in the last two years, nor any indication of where she moved on to. A reliable source informed me that the ex-husband has had little to do with his ex-wife for some time, and that the marriage was largely a matter of convenience, as he has for some time been residing with his male lover...and, er...was before and, uh, during their marriage. Which gives me reason to believe that the daughter may well be someone else's offspring, even though the ex-husband has other children by other women, apparently. Yet he still shows up as father on the girl's birth certificate."
*She looked up from her notes.*
"Of course it's odd that her ex-father-in-law would have been the one to "discover" the body. ...perhaps he should be brought in for questioning."

"Questioning?" *Smecker looked up, studying her face.*
"Questioning concerning what? You still think it's a suicide, don't you?"

"Then why's her ex-father-in-law getting so involved and making up his own theories? It doesn't fit."

*Smecker was quiet for a moment, calculating.*
"Get him in here tomorrow."
*He shuffled some papers.*
"You want to be good cop or bad cop?"

"Good," *she said firmly, pleased that she was going to be any kind of cop.*

*Smecker held his thought, like he was making up his mind.*
"Fine. Tomorrow, 10 am. Make it happen."
*It was a test, but he was almost certain that she'd find a way.*

"Yeah." *He smiled quirkily.*
"Almost exactly like one."
*He cocked his head.*
"For...questioning?"

*She grinned--she knew when she was being mocked.*
"Fine, fine," *she laughed.* "Just be careful--sometimes you're so direct you end up operating on a level of in-jokes only you can understand. I'll get there, in time."

"If I wasn't certain you would, you wouldn't be in this office."
*Smecker turned back to his papers, but thought of something with a snap of his finger.*
"Right! Of course."
*He bent to open the locked drawer of his file cabinet and dug around in it for a few seconds. Reemerging, he tossed her a badge with a clip.*
"It should help you help you get what you need, at least until I can get you one with a photo. They seem a bit backward around here, so it might be a while."
*The badge read FBI: Office in Training.*
