"What spirit?"
It prodded the dead man's cheek and then drew back again, grabbing Grantaire's other lifeless arm and turning it over examining the thick, viney scars and velvety burnmarks on the upper arm.

"A lost one."
*Julian turned quickly and walked away, under the cover of fetching a small screwdriver. He didn't want Iza to know how he worried. Or why.*
"I only hope that it will work in the end."

"Pretty mark up dead-face here here?"
It dragged a claw across an old scar of Grantaire's and then across the fake gill slits in its side.

*Julian's focus was broken at the question and he looked quickly to the area, his frown returning. He shook his head.*
"No. He came with those."

"Oh. Has call thing? Dead-face? Is Pretty Care care?"
Izame hopped back around the bed, giving a trill and a curious chirp at finding a bit of sparkly dust on the floor from metal-grinding.

*Julian blinked, trying to work out what he could of the question with what little knowledge he had.*
"Grantaire. That was his name. Before."

"Gran-t-arrrr." It repeated and gave a barking sort of laugh--a really unpleasant sound, actually, then poked at Julian's leg.
"Pretty Care care, Gran-t-arr?"

*Julian blinked, looking down at the creature. Care care? Like...Erik. He shrugged.*
"I don't know if that is what I would call it. I helped him though. He was unhappy."
*Julian bent to turn a few of the internal screws.*
"He was an unexpected visitor."

The merman watched, gripping onto the folds of Julian's shirt as it crouched behind him, leaning around to watch.
"Why unhappy? If helped, why dead-face?"

*Julian didn't look up as he spoke.*
"Apparently is was in a situation that upset him. He wanted to die. I just made the transition painless."

"You killed?" The creature frowned and slipped around Julian, climbing up onto the bed and kneeling between Julian and the dead man, interrupting his work and tilting his head at the man.
"Pretty killed Care, Gran-t-arr. For steal dead-face, make metal-move spirit cage..."

*Julian stopped, still half buried in mechanical guts. He turned to face the being, vexation in his eyes.*
"I did as he wished. He would have been dead in three days."
*His brow was stern, but his voice lowered.*
"A slow, painful death." *He hissed.* "Was I not...merciful, to help him so?"

"Take make dead-face otherthan...not good. Should burn-bury, make dead-face white Care care face, not keep shape Gran-t-arr. Make force-keep not not good, loose tears, bring back dead-face spirit. Trap!" It snapped its jaws together hard. "Trap in spirit cage, make cry cry cry..."

*The sound of the babbling etched its way under Julian's skin, his whole body tensing. He shut his eyes bitterly.*
"Erik!" *He said sharply in desperation. The he clarified quietly.*
"It's for Erik."
*He swallowed, the pain of the loss reading in his brow.*
"He's....lost."

"Does not belong to Care care Erik...make bad bad mistake, much hurt. Everyone."
It churred and leaned forward on the bed, nuzzling up to Julian's chest.
"No sad Care Julian. No cry cry cry. Shark wait with."
