*Aimee had made it home without any further happenings. Eponine had fled, as Aimee knew she would, and the maid had taken care of the twins and set them to bed. Aimee quickly stripped off her grungy clothes and bathed, before putting on a white nightgown and a dressing gown to keep warm over it. Despite the warm summer night, she had a fire lit; she was chilled to the bone. She paced, she wrung her hands, she tried to read, tried to needlepoint, tried to embroider (this resulted in a bleeding thumb). Nothing distracted her, and though the house was far away from the fighting, she could hear cannons. Every time she heard a blast she couldn't help but wonder if it had hit Marius's barricade, and whether or not Marius was still alive.*
*Now she just stared at the fire, dead tired but too worried to sleep.*

**SOMETIME LATER**
*The fighting had gotten rather nasty at the barricade Marius was stationed at, enough so that a lot of manpower had been lost and the remaining forces having to retreat or die. In the ensuing madness, a few well-placed shots had taken Marius down--not dead, but injured enough that he'd be of no further help in the fighting.
Once his injuries had been taken care of, and the nurses had deemed it all right, he'd been carefully removed from the battlefront and sent home. Red, knowing that Isa would hold down the fort, had gone with to make sure there were no complications on the way.
So it was that a carriage pulled up before the house, waiting as a red-headed girl approached the front door*

*Red, frazzled, and still grimy from being a nurse on the battlefront, rang the bell and waited patiently for someone to answer. Part of her was glad to be away from the death and destruction, but another part wanted to get back there and save what lives she could.
She stood, wringing her hands*

*Aimee had heard the carriage rolled up and opened the door, clad only in her nightgown with her hair around her shoulders, almost before Red had rung the bell.*
"Oh God... please don't tell me..."
*It was obvious from the tremble in her voice and the fear in her eyes what she thought the girl's presence meant.*

"Oh, no...it's not that." She said quickly.
"He was badly injured, but he'll be all right. We had to send him home because he couldn't fight anymore and we can't keep all the injured with us..." She was babbling, trying to be reassuring.

"He's here? Where? Let me see him, let me..."
*She felt useless... but secretly, she was pleased he had to stay home.*
"How was he injured?"

*Red stepped back and pointed to the carriage*
"There. He...he was shot. Multiple times." Her voice had gotten very small.
"And he'll be walking with a limp once it all heals up."

*She nodded gently before clasping Red's hand.*
"Thank you." *She said softly.* "I don't know you, but thank you for bringing my husband home."
*But then she looked at the carriage.*
"Will you help me bring him inside?"
((Except for the fact that Scarlett's her niece... she's separated from her family and Aimee never paid much attention to Fitz after Eponine's first death anyway... though once she finds out Aimee's maiden name we could have some kind of plot if you like. This is all coming out like mouth diarrhea as I type so excuse craziness.))

((I'd completely forgotten that they have family ties. Maybe we could use that--Red has amnesia and doesn't remember anyone))
"Oh, of course I'll help--he's only half-conscious because of the painkillers, so he'll be like a limp noodle...hard to move by yourself."

((I know. ^_^ ))
*She smiled a little.*
"Let's go, then."
*She moved toward the carriage, opened the door, and kept her resolve even as she had to carry (with help from Red) her injured husband up to their room. Once he was on the bed Aimee fussed over him, making sure he was under the covers and propping injured parts up on pillows.*

*Marius stirred when he was moved, though he didn't completely awaken as he was brought upstairs. Red didn't have as much trouble with him as she would have back when she was still in medical school--thanks to having to move the sometimes heavy injured at the barricades, she'd developed some muscle. Once he was settled in, she turned to Aimee* "He's got really good recuperative powers, but...you should still keep an eye out. Some of this overlaps old injuries. I'd stay to help, but...they need me back there... "

*She nodded.*
"Goodbye, then."
*It was only after the girl had gone that Aimee realized she'd forgotten to ask her name. When she turned back to Marius, tears welled up in her eyes. She sat beside him and clasped one of his hands between both of her smaller ones.*
"I shouldn't have left you." *She whispered.*

*Hours later, after the painkiller had somewhat worn off, Marius finally came fully back to wakefulness. At first, his forehead creased in confusion as all he saw was the canopy of the bed. Then, it all came rushing back--the gunfire, the searing pain, and brief glimpses of nurses and the inside of the medical station. Nothing, and then...
Home. That's where he was. And beside him, his wife*
"Aimee..." He said weakly, the word almost a sigh.
