After an early for the evening encounter with a customer, László had wandered his way over to the opera house. Normally he wouldn't be here at this hour, but it was technically still light out so he could procrastinate a little bit.
Thus, he was standing near, listening to the singing. Whoever the Marguerite was, she had an impressive voice.

Ghislain recognized the man who approached, first knowing him by his way of walking - Ghislain paid such attention to how people moved that that sort of thing was generally readily familiar to him - and then by his face. He barely smiled, although the sense of excitement he got would have made anyone else positively smirk. He didn't know his name, but you sell yourself long enough and you know another renter when you see him.
"Come to the Opera often?" said Ghislain, flicking the cigarette butt at him harmlessly, almost unfurling from where he was leaning against the railing. "Funny. It's the one place I haven't seen you."

He took a step back, not from any sort of fear but because of the cigarette butt. He eyed Ghislain appraisingly, judging in much the same way that Ghislain had judged him by appearance and the way he held himself.
"Only once in a while...though I wasn't aware anyone even bothered to pay attention to where I go."

It wasn't, of course, a matter of Ghislain's paying him any special attention, but rather one of Ghislain's simply remembering the people he saw on a regular basis. And his was a job that involved lots and lots of people, after all.
"Mm-hm. Beautifully unconscious." He was still looking him over in a mild but intense way. "Don't tell me you've never seen me."

He raised an eyebrow at the question.
"No, I've never seen you before."
He wasn't aware of other rentboys--well, he'd never seen any, even if he'd heard they were out there.

Ghislain was not a pouting sort of person, and even the momentary expression meant to evince sulkiness betrayed a great deal of bemusement.
"Last Tuesday, for example. About 10 pm, rather early for us, I'd imagine. Gentleman in a bowler. Hilarious moustache. No?" Ghislain shrugged with simplistic elegance. "I don't imagine he was much of a tipper. Looked like the sort who'd call himself thrifty."

László just stared at Ghislain. How in the world could he be that precise? In fact, why would he even want to remember any details of a given evening?
"I don't know who you're talking about." He said, his soft voice showing a hint of flatness.

"Oh, you don't remember by sight, then?" Ghislain went on with nonchalant indifference in his voice, thoroughly enjoying himself. "A sensation sort of person?" His eyes glanced down his body quickly enough for it to be clearly a passing interest, and slowly enough for it to register as interest. "How nice. Hm. Did his mustache tickle?"
Ghislain was very clearly smiling, in a sort of unsettling way, as he said this last sentence.

A stormcloud passed over László's features.
"I prefer to remember nothing," he spat. "And I'd rather it stayed that way."
He moved away, not a retreat but more to put a bit of distance between them. He most certainly did not want to talk to him anymore.

Ghislain watched, almost bemused, interest piqued, predictably.
"All right. So some of us are amnesiacs," he said, to unassuming ears quite affably. Ghislain was hardly that. His suethor rolled her eyes and tried to hide a smile. He had a rather photographic memory, but then, he was not the sort of person who liked to remember nothing. How could you change a tedious situation if you did not recall the particulars of it? "I bet you break hearts that way. All those silly sentimental gentlemen whose faces fall when you don't remember them."
The faintest snicker - not quite that, but nearly, as Ghislain was very easy-going sounding - entered into his voice, particularly in the word 'gentlemen'. Ghislain was both crueller and easier with other prostitutes. While he liked to test their patience more than he did with others, seeing them as comrades in some way or other, he also liked to drag them into conversations filled with inside references. And he didn't imagine this man was any less scornful of their clients than he was.

He rolled his eyes. All right, so he wasn't going to be left in peace to listen to the rehearsal.
"Anyone that thinks they could get any more out of a renter than sex is fooling themselves." He said. His voice wasn't flat, but it was still cool.

Ghislain laughed. It was not nice, but it was inclusive, and not directed at the other man.
"Preaching to the choir," he said, eyes glittering as he fixed them on him again, this time approving. "Or trying to listen to it? Mm, you know, there are ways other than the front door to get in, and the sound is much better backstage..."
Ghislain did not say how he knew this, but he spoke in an airy, worldly way about it all.
