"Yes, but those go to poor houses, not the shelters. If you don't think there's a difference, there is. There are men who would take advantage of the poor and unfortunate, men who would sell of the children for labor."
He shook his head "My shelter is small, so they tell me I am in less need of funds than the others, the poor are the same everywhere."

He didn't quite know what to say anymore. There were programs for all sorts of things back in Dracheheim--for all the negative, it did have positive in it. But he realized that he was thinking of modern concepts that might not exist here in this twisted version of Paris.
"I'm sorry your shelter had to be here. There are other places that would actually help."

"It's why I built it here and not London" he said "the people here don't have the things they have back home. They needed something like the shelter, I needed it."
He turned to Laszlo "I wasn't always so optimistic you know."

"Sometimes a man needs to help others in order to help himself. So that's what I did, to tell you the truth I hate Paris and would have given anything to raise my daughter in London where she belonged, but I guess someone had bigger plans for me here."

"Could be so, about the plans. If it weren't for you I'd probably be dead by vampire or violent customer by now...or rotting in prison."
On impulse, he pulled John into a hug.
"You saved me, you know."

"Saved me from so much I don't think I'd ever be able to put it all into words."
László sighed as he pulled back a bit.
"I'm glad I ran to Paris instead of somewhere else."

"Yeah, but it kind of undercuts that when it's usually bad things happening to you that they say that about. My coming here--"
He paused, biting his lip.
"I didn't come to Paris because I wanted to. I was...running."

The events that had led to his departure swirled about in his memory.
"Scandal. Threat. Although the scandal part didn't scare me, but the threat certainly did--it wasn't an idle one."
He sighed.
"I got mixed up with a polititian, and it's exactly what you'd think. Of course I can't tell anybody, hush-hush nobody should know an important member of the city government picks up rentboys." He laughed. "As though anybody'd believe me."

"That's unfortunate, men like that-" he sighed "I'm so sorry."

He shrugged.
"Some of the girls warned about getting tangled up in that kind of trainwreck, but all I could see was money signs and went ahead anyway. And then somehow someone found out about me and rather than face the music he slapped money into my hand and told me to bail."
László slowly exhaled.
"That's why I came to Paris."
