Rainsong used the handkerchief to wipe the tears of her face. She was surprised by his reaction. She hadn't expected that from him. Did he have a heart after all? But - he had bought her from her parents. People with hearts didn't buy other people.
"Thank you."
Her voice was only a silent whisper, and she didn't look at him when she offered him his handkerchief, now soaked with her tears, back.

Lux seized the handkerchief from Rainsong. With a slight clenching of his hand, it disappeared, almost melting away into the air.
They silently wound their way into the dark regions of the forest.

Rainsong walked silently next to Lux. She was still afraid of him. He had not said a word to her. Not even told her who he was. She wondered if she could run away. Then she noticed something on the path in front of her. It was moving quickly towards her. When it came closer she saw it was a poisonous snake. She froze in fear.

"Do not fear the creature," Lux instructed. "Leave it be, and it will do the same for you."
Despite his words, however, the snake reared its head and hissed furiously at their approach. It coiled its body into position, prepared to lunge at the first indication of danger.

Rainsong looked at the snake. Her slender body was trembling in fear. There was some rustlling in her skirts because of the trembling, and the snake attacked her.

Lux furrowed his brow and speedily intervened, dropping Rainsong's possessions to the ground with a clamor and unsheathing his sword. With a slash and a spatter of blood, the snake lay writhing but dead at their feet.
"Did it bite you?" Lux asked, already crouching down to inspect her legs.

Rainsong felt a bit numb in her left leg. Her eyes filled with tears again, and she nodded, not daring to look at the man who had bought her from her parents.

Lux pardoned himself and lifted the hem of the girl's skirt to better locate the wound.
"This won't do," he muttered at the two small--but frighteningly scarlet--slits on her ankle. Lux stood and presently addressed Rainsong.
"I'll have to carry you the rest of the way."

Rainsong froze in fear by the thought of this man touching her.
"It's not that bad. I can walk."
She tried to sound braver than she was. She was slightly worried that the snakebite was poisonous.

"Then, by the time we arrive at our destination, you'll have long expired from the poison," he stated bluntly. "There is no use quarreling with me."
With that, Lux gathered the girl's possessions with one hand and hefted Rainsong onto his shoulder with the other.

Rainsong looked unhappily down at him from her position onto his shoulder.
"How can I quarrel with you when I don't even know your name?"
She finally dared to say, even if her voice was trembling a little.

"It's Lux."
His feet crunched softly upon the forest floor, and every so often, he would reposition Rainsong on his shoulder.

Rainsong felt stupid hanging over his shoulder.
"Are you certain I am not too heavy for you?"
She tried, hoping he would set her down soon.

"No," he answered, realizing her intentions. "Besides, we're already here."
Lux strode up a dirt path to a cottage nestled within a cluster of pine trees.

Rainsong sighed. Her little escape attempt had failed. She felt anxiety when he carried her towards the cottage nestled within a cluster of pine trees. It felt as if she was on her way to years of captivity.
