*Kirk offered Haldir his charming, boyish smile.*
"Nessa requested my presence as her escort," *he said.* "I'm Captain James T. Kirk, of the Starship... Enterprise. I am, for the moment, stranded, and Miss Nessa graciously offered me a place to stay. I regret the loss of your queen, Captain. By all accounts she was a remarkable woman."

*Haldir smiled warmly. The pain of losing the only woman in his life still caused him pain.*
"I am glad you take care of Nessa for us," *he replied* "These are dangerous times. And thank you for your sympathy. Her Majesty was indeed remarkable. This is a great loss for Lorien, and my heart is heavy. But I welcome you to stay for as long as you like. Turn to Nessa if you have any questions. She can take care of your needs."

*Sam Vimes had been aloud to listen in, and wasn't quite sure how he felt about this. No question that Steerpike would be a better king than Ordaug, but so would most forms of lichen.*
Lucky bastard...poor Old Stoneface got drawn and quartered, and this one gets the throne.
*The simple truth was, he didn't trust Steerpike. Then again, he didn't trust anyone, so that wasn't much one way or another. He pulled out a cigar, wishing this was back in Ankh-Morpork, where he had a bit more authority.*
At least he's smart, whatever else he turns out to be.

*Nessa skipped over to Sam Vimes, offering her hand in a greeting.*
"Hello again, monsieur Vimes." *She smiled cheerfully.*
"I never got the chance to find you a room. Do you want me to find one for you now?"

"Alright."
*He looked back over at the crowd of departing elves*
"That's a very impressive vote of confidence..."

*Nessa laughed and pulled him aside, so nobody else could hear them.*
"Honestly, it's a test. It is up to him if he pass or fail. How strong he is. And how noble.*
*She looked at the departing elves.*
"One mistake, and they will see to his departure. For good."

*He nodded*
"Well, if you don't mind my saying, it won't take much to be better than Ordaug."

*Nessa laughed, and there was a glimpse of humor in her eyes.*
"Nobody can get worse than Orduag."
*She looked up at him again.*
"You still haven't told me where you want to stay. Inside the castle or in a tree house? We also have a guest house on the ground, for people who are afraid of high places."

"The castle's fine, thanks."
*No heating, but at least he'd be away from nature*
"Did you say this was a test?"

*Nessa smiled and looked around to see if someone had heard him, then she looked up at him.*
"Not here," *she whispered.* "Come with me to your room, and I'll tell you anything you want to know."

*Haldir placed a hand on Captain Kirk's shoulder.*
"You are most welcome. There might be a thing I want you to do for me...."
*He lowered his voice.*
"I am afraid our beloved queen was murdered. I can't prove anything, but when I examined the corpses I found evidence that the King couldn't possibly have murdered the Queen...."
*He looked around, but nobody had heard him.*
"Are you willing to look around, and see if you can solve this case?"

*Kirk frowned.*
"I... don't understand," *he said.* "If you suspect something's wrong, why let this coronation go forward? Why let a human take an elven throne? Forgive me, I'm not familiar with your ways. But surely there's a more direct approach."
*Kirk was a fan of the direct approach.*

*Haldir looked at him, smiling.*
"Because that would be the easiest thing to do. And the easiest thing is not always the best. Queen Tearbird gave me a paper before she died. In this paper she writes she wants my sister Leetah's baby as her heir. Leetah adopted the child to the Queen, since the Queen herself didn't have any childen. My sister has run away to give birth to the child. But it will take 18 years before the child can return to Lorien and claim the throne. In the meanwhile we will test out the morality of the person we suspect the most. His future actions will show us whether he is guilty or innocent. This coronation is a test. Maybe the hardest test of them all."
