"We all know the king was an aberration of our kind," said one of the men, standing up, "but regardless, this human responded with equal brutality."

*Haldir stood up as well, turning against the men.*
"And who among us would not respond with brutality, defending the ones they love? There was no question about Steerpike's loyalty to our beloved Queen Tearbird."
*The room became so quiet after this reply that you could hear a hairpin fall. (It was Nessa who dropped it)*

"I understad if you wish to see me punished," Steerpike said softly.

*Nessa came over to him and placed herself behind him, placing her tiny hand on his shoulder.*
"Dont worry, Steerpike, nobody will punish you."
*She looked up with flaming eyes.*
"Because if they do, they have to pass THIS!!!"
*She pulled up her dagger, throwing it across the room so the blade went into the woodwork on the wall. The dagger vibrated for some time after the throw.*

Steerpike suppressed a small grin and quickly looked sorrowful again.
"What would you have me do?" he asked plaintively.
One of the men stood and said, rather uncomfortably, "We found something amongst His Majesty's papers that will likely surprise you. You see... he named you next in the succession."
Chaos erupted, as several Elves shouted objections all at once.

*Haldir looked surprised as well. He knew very well that Queen Tearbird had the real power in the country, and that King Orduag had been removed from his authority by his own father.
He also remembered that Tearbird had asked permission to adopt Leetahs child. But the child wasn't born yet. Leetah had ran away from the court because she needed to go through some magical rituals to secure the childs magic skills. And the child had to stay hidden untill it was old enough to claim the throne back.*
"I will remind you that King Orduag was dismissed by his own father."
*He calmly replied.*
"I suggest that we vote for who we want to be our next king."
*His last sentence was spoken to maintain peace and quiet in the room. And that could be needed, because some of the elves looked like they wanted to kill Steerpike right away.*

"I am only a child, sirs," Steerpike protested. "I am only in my seventeenth year..."

*Nessa laughed.*
"Don't worry. You'll learn. Our beloved queen was given to our king in her earliest childhood, and she was the best Queen we ever had..."
*Tears filled her eyes.*
"May she rest in peace....."

"But there's still a vote, yes? Surely there's someone better qualified..."

*Leetah sat down on his lap, looking him pleadingly in the eyes.*
"You are our only hope. Please....."

Don't smile. Don't smile. Don't smile...
"If you insist..." he said slowly.

*Nessa squealed with joy.*
"You will? Oh THANK you!"
*She kissed him on the cheek with a loud smooching sound, and huggled him.*

Everything seemed to happen in slow motion. A few of the men began to applaud, then more, and then a clutch of them were surrounding him, shouting things that he wasn't really listening to, grinning, cheering, clapping him on the shoulder, picking up his chair, carrying him out on their shoulders...
And in the middle of it all, the object of all this adoration was the pale, thin young man who had been a kitchen boy some forever ago, and he was smiling in triumph.

*Kirk watched quietly from the sidelines. He could not interfere--yet. He didn't know enough. But this seemed wrong. Something about the young man was off. And from what he knew of the elves, the installment of a human on the thrown seemed like a mockery.
He would wait, and learn more.*

*Haldir came over to Captain Kirk, offering his hand in a greeting.*
"I can't remember seeing you here, so you must be new. I am Captain Haldir of Lorien, the Highest Commander of the Elven Army. Welcome to our kingdom."
