"I've had enemies all my life. And I know it was my husband who was elected, not I. I think of Elves as I do my own people- containing both good and bad."
*She smiled slightly*
"Forgive me- I'm a pie-maker. I'm still new to politics."

*Haldir smiled slightly as well.*
"Well, my father was the youngest brother of King Orduag's father, so I belong to the oldest royal family of Lorien. I am not new to politics. I know the people here and I know what they're thinking. That's why I'm warning you."

"And what are they thinking? What fresh sins have I committed?"

*Haldir shrugged. The rumors said about the queen and the king were so ugly that he refused to tell her about them. No matter what they had done, they didn't deserve to hear them.*
"Those are among the nice rumors, your majesty."

"And why? Because we are human? Was it a joke to elect Steerpike?"

"To select Steerpike as a king was a test. A test that he so far has failed. Since he murdered the king, we wanted to give him a chance to prove that he could do something useful for Lorien. The only thing he has done so far, is partying and slumbering. We are very disappointed. Our former king Orduag did exactly the same."

"Partying? You know that isn't true. He does not enjoy merriment, and has never once stayed at a full banquet."
*Now she was getting angry*
"You speak as if he were worse than Ordaug, a man who tried to rape me. A man you only tolerated because of his wife-"
*She stopped*
"An I being molded to replace her?"

*Haldir looked coolly at her, with a slight smile on his face. The human queen was finally showing her true face.*
"The first thing we mentioned for him was the starvation at the border. He did not once order food from the royal castle to be brought to the starving. We have had plague along the border. Leetah worked herself half to death to try to cure the people there, while you both were in the castle slandering her for being your enemy. And you claim to be better than Orduag?"
*His eyes were dark and lightening.*
"Whatever I felt about the former King and Queen, it is not your right to tell me what I tolerate. Once again you show no faith in my judgement of characters, and yet your own judgement are rather poor. You really ARE a piemaker. I will see to that you both will be brought back to Paris, to the piemaker shop you came from!"
*He turned on his heels and left.*

*She grabbed him by the shoulder*
"Are you sure you told him of this? Or me? Or were you keeping it secret, hoping to see me fail?"
'Me'- should have said 'us'. But if Steerpike got himself into this problem, he can worry about who fixes it himself.
"You're right, I'm common. There's not a trace of royal bood in me ((me: or so she thought...)), and I'm proud of it. If I were noble, I would have had you killed a long time ago for treason. I'm only a piemaker, and so I don't play a dirty as a true monarch would."
*She stood at her full height*
"If I have to make the food with my own hands I will! Whoever you elected, and as whatever sick joke, I swear to you this day by whatever god you believe in that I will not let your people down!"
*She took a breath, calming herself down*
"Tell me more about this problem."

*Haldir looked at her, his eyes still dark from a wrath that was slowly rising in him. He used his self control to remain calm as he spoke.*
"Once again you show little faith in my people. Why would we want to hope to see you fail? It is your own actions and words that judge you. You don't need our help to make mistakes. We have had one corrupted monarch in the last 300 years, yet you dare to call our monarchs dirty. Our monarchs have done more for the world than your husband ever will. And if you had known anything about the people you claim to be the queen of, you would have seen that most of us are not religious. Only the ones with human bloods, sometimes believe in a god."

"I can't please you, can I? When I stay in the background smiling, you accuse me of letting the people die. When I get involved, I suddenly become impolitic."
*She sighed in frustration*
"You don't have to like me. But I'm here, and I'm going to do my job."
*She turned, heading for the castle*

*Haldir looked after her.*
"It is not I who don't like you." *He said quietly.* "It's the gossipers at the court. Among them your new maids."

"Nessa, you mean?"

*Haldir snorted.*
"Don't be ridiculous. Nessa wouldn't hurt a fly. And she never speaks ill of anyone. No, it's the new maids you brought in."

"Yes, I didn't think it would be her."
*She stood silent for a moment, in thought*
"I'm not loved, and apparantly I'm not feared. I was poisoned, resulting in my son's death. You tell me that you'll have me back in my pie shop, and by now that would be a relief. But as long as I'm queen, I'm going to take care of my people, whatever we think of each other. I promise you that."
