*Mulder had often wondered how he'd gotten the same number as his apartment, not to mention why a motel with ten rooms even had a number 42, but at least he could remember it. The Doctor had scouted for them, and they met no one. If someone was peeking around curtains, Mulder supposed he'd have to make something up. But not right now.
He urged Poe inside the sparse, but clean, room and shut the door. He turned up the heater and turned off the overhead lights in favor of the dimmer bedside lamp.*
"You're safe now, Poe," *he said quietly, urging her to sit on the bed.* "Can I get you something?"

((42 ftmfw.))
*Poe was still shaking as he adjusted the lights. She hugged herself, feeling strangely naked. It was one thing to take on this form at will, but another thing to be forced into it. It was terrible. She finally stripped the sheet from the bed and draped it over herself, shrouding her form. It made her feel a bit better as she huddled on the bed.*
"Thank you...sir. For your generosity. It is...unexpected."

((You know that's actually his apartment number, right?))
It shouldn't be. Humans are notorious for caring erratically.
"You're welcome," *he said.
He drew a quilt from the closet and draped it around her as well, before gently sitting on the bed.*
"I don't really have any plans."

((Hence the mf part. )) *Poe's brow furrowed in confusion.* "Plans, sir?" *She looked around, suddenly startled.* "Am I...keeping you? I don't mean to..."

((I couldn't remember if you were a fan.))
*Mulder laid a firm hand on her shoulder.*
"No, you aren't. I only meant to say that you're not causing me any trouble. I have as long as you need."

((Oh yes. At least until he left the show. Then I watched less, but caught half of the last season.))
*Poe stared at his hand for a long time. Then she pursed her lips and looked up at him in innocent concern.*
"But...what if it doesn't get better? I can't stay here forever. I'll....I'll die."

((Ah. Good. I left when he did... then didn't come back. Well, I stuck it out a few eps for Scully's sake, because she's actually my favorite. But still.))
*Mulder smiled in what he hoped was a reassuring manner.*
"We have a friend with a time-traveling spaceship," *he said.* "We'll figure it out. Can I do anything for you?"

*Poe quieted, seeking through the options. None seemed valid.*
"Just..."
*She pursed her lips.*
"Hold me until I am able to sleep? The hibernation period might allow the malfunction to right itself. But..."
*Her voice grew soft.*
"....I am afraid."

*Mulder nodded.*
"I can do that. Poe... You're like no one I've ever met before. I'm not going to let anything happen to you, do you understand? I'm a very determined human."
*He eased her down to the bed, his arms curling around her from behind. Something about her words troubled him.*
"Poe... How long is your hibernation period, usually? I want to know if something's wrong."

*Poe seemed to find some peace in his arms, her breathing calming significantly. At his question, her brow furrowed.*
"My normal hibernation cycle...for simple body maintenance?"
*She paused for a moment, doing the math.*
"About...3 Earth hours. It may take longer since something is wrong. Is that too long? Will you need to go before I am out of it again?"

"No," *he said, his smile in his voice.* "That sounds just fine."
*He stroked her arm.*

*Poe nodded in quiet acceptance. She shut her eyes, resting back against him. Within a minute her breathing had shallowed so it nearly stopped all together and she had grown perfectly still.*

*Mulder was well aware that her metabolic processes would be unusual, so he did not worry when she got very still. Instead, he warred within himself over feelings of tenderness he knew to be outside the parameters of what they, in reality, were to each other.
Well. He'd never lived his life planning for what might logically occur from his actions.*

*Poe was still for three hours. Then four. Then four and a half. Nothing changed. Then there was the faintest flickering of her skin, almost a shimmer, but she didn't wake, the motion seeming very localized.*

*When Mulder's arm fell asleep, he pulled it out from under Poe. She did not stir. For awhile, he watched her propped up on one elbow. Then he lay back, processing the events, the new people, the new information.
But she slept on. Mulder waited still, rising once to retrieve a packet of sunflower seeds. The room was still, and he noticed her slight movement. Still he waited without trying to wake her; she had been though a lot, and he had no way of telling what was normal.*
