"But would she really see reason? After all, you said yourself she is unwell, and I'm guessing she's not hurt physically. What happened to her that causes you to need to be so protective? So annoyingly protective...."
*Edward trailed off and tried to look for any way to free himself. Finding none, he gave up and resigned himself to wait until he was released. If he was released. From the looks of this man, he could be facing prison or some other unpleasant punishment which he'd rather not think about.*

*Holmes looked up at Irene/Lilith. Though it did not show, he was feeling something akin to desperation.*
"Lilith," *he said, trying not to choke on her name.* "If I let him go, and you come away with me, you can do whatever you like with me. I promise that much."
*It was a gamble--trusting that she'd want him that badly--and a bargain he would mostly likely regret. But it could not compare to what might happen in this man's clutches.*

*She licked her lips*
"Oh, that would hurt Miss Irene so much..."
*He took a step toward him*
"Promise?"

*Her expression made him feel ill. He weight his options: on the one hand, Irene would hate him for what he'd allowed her to do. On the other... Irene might die.
It was hardly a choice.*
"Yes," *he said hoarsely.* "My word. As a gentleman."

"Then take my word as a lady..."
*She leaned in to whisper in his ear*
"...that you will not soon forget this night."
*She stood back, triumphant*
"You have a deal."

*Holmes blushed involuntarily at her words. He would hate himself, already hated himself, for what would happen tonight.
But if it spared Irene the least heartbreak (or death), he would sacrifice himself gladly.*
"You have my word."
*He released Hyde, brushing off his hands as if there was some residue left on them, and went to stand before Irene.*

*she shoved him against the wall and kissed him roughly, enjoying his fear*
"We'll find someplace more private..."
((To the opium den.))

*Edward stood exactly where Holmes had released him, not believing he'd lost his chance. He stared at the retreating couple in a mixture of shock and anger. Holmes would pay for this one, and possibly the Irene he'd mentioned also. Oh, they would pay.*
