*Poe nodded.*
"That might be best. Other forms might be...complicated."
*She considered each in turn.*
"Eight or Nine...which do you think would be better suited?"

"Nine," *Mulder said suddenly, then looked a bit sheepish.* "Sorry. I just... realized who you were."
*The Doctor's eyes narrowed--not in displeasure, but in thought.*
"PBS child?"
*Mulder nodded and raised his hand.* "Guilty as charged."

*Poe looked confused for a moment.*
"You...have an opinion, sir? But I have not showed you those particular forms yet."

*The Doctor smiled.*
"Seems I enjoy a brief popularity in the latter half of the 20th century," *he explained.* "Mulder knows about me from there."
*He waved his hand.*
"It's no matter, Poe."

*Poe nodded in acceptance, he form swelling and shifting into the Doctor's ninth incarnation.*
"So what now?"

*Mulder blinked at the new Poe. That was... uncanny. And strange. Alien sex was one thing. He noticed the Doctor--the real one--beaming at his previous incarnation. That, too, was weird.*
"I have no idea," *he said.* "Get elected?"
"You form a base of support," *the Doctor said.* "Build a platform--of important issues you want to address, Poe, not an actual platform of wood--and convince the populace of the rightness of your vision. Dirty business, really."

*Poe frowned.*
"But...how do I do that? What are my issues?"

*The Doctor laughed.*
"We may have chosen the wrong way to go about this. Works best--well, most honestly--when you've got something you're fighting for. Of course, the best at the politician game are the ones who have absolutely nothing at all to say. But that's another matter. You've met people here, Poe. What do you think they'd want to change about their lives? That is, that the government could do?"

*Poe frowned.*
"Sir, such things are not my area of expertise. I replicate and observe, but I am not one to analyze the motivations of my subjects. From what I can tell, they lament the lack of sexual activity in their lives, are unhappy with their marital engagements, dislike being lonely, would rather have more material wealth and seek empathy and regard from others of their kind. I am unsure how such things will be helpful for what you suggest."

*Mulder giggled. The Doctor considered her thoughtfully.*
"No... I'm not sure those are things you can legislate."
*He crossed his arms.*
"We're going about this all wrong, Poe. It's perfectly valid to try all the avenues you want to; but you should have some interest in the pursuit itself beyond its level of difficulty. Do you feel any special pull towards anything? Say, to teach children. Or adults. To research, say, disease and its cure, or how things work. Any number of things--have you seen anyone here and thought, 'I would like to do that'?"

*Poe thought long and hard. And twitched. And frowned.*
"I...I can't..."
*She tried to push past the pain that was starting to press into her temples.*
"Too soon..."
*She stumbled slightly, bracing herself on the bedside table.*

*Both men moved simultaneously to support her, their eyes meeting over her shoulder.*
"Too much," *The Doctor murmured, and Mulder nodded.*
"It's okay, Poe. We're pushing you too fast."

*Poe's form flickered a moment, her spots showing faintly under her more human visage. She sighed heavily.*
"Perhaps this is a futile endeavor. What if I am never able to fully overcome the failsafe?"

"Maybe we're pushing too hard. Too much of a commitment, perhaps. Easy steps, not throwing you into public office. Sit down."
*He guided her to a chair, then crouched in front of her. Seeing his past self was always amusing, but it was hardly the first time.*
"I don't care if you do anything Mulder suggests. Or anyone. All I care about is that you have the choice. That you act on what you want, rather than what you've been trained to want. Some of those... may be the same things. But you don't have to do anything."

*Poe frowned.*
"Mulder has not made me do anything. He's just been trying to help...like you."
*She scrunched her nose.*
"I just...I want to know all of my potentials, but perhaps I can never fully explore them. That's all."
