*Sylvia lowered her head with a small smile, raising her hand to brush the hair back from Virginia’s face.*
“That’s very generous of you Miss…”
*Her brows arched inquisitively.*

*Virginia permitted the touch to linger for a moment before she withdrew.* "...just call me Gin," *she said.*

*Sylvia raised her head with a sigh.*
“Ah. Miss Gin. And what would you ask for such an honor?”
This is always the hard part.

"What might you say I am worth?" *asked Virginia timidly, looking as though the wrong answer might shatter her.*

*Sylvia raised her brow, her voice calm as she looked Virginia over coolly.*
“Twenty francs.”
((I am using a reference I found. “Artists were required to pay a monthly fee from 12 to 25 francs to the common fund of the studio to pay teachers and models, and to cover the expenses of materials and cleaning supplies.” And “Starting capital for different types of firms varied widely from 19,000 francs to establish a new bakery to 2,000 francs to open a fabric shop.” I’ll keep looking for better examples, but it should give an idea.))

*Virginia broke character and clapped her hands over her mouth with an air-swallowing gasp.*
"Are you serious? Men pay that much just for...?"
*She shook her head and snapped back into focus.*
"I mean...very good, Monsieur. As you wish," *she bowed her head demurely.*

*Lifting Virginia’s chin again with her fingertips, Sylvia leaned forward, pausing for a moment before tracing her tongue over Virginia’s bottom lip slowly. Her voice was quiet and dark.*
“So what’s next?”

"Then...I let them do what they want?" *she said, as though uncertain of her catechism.*

*Sylvia frowned slightly, dropping her façade.*
“Virginia, you are not a piece of meat. You are nothing that is bought and paid for and owned. You are compensated for your time, but you never relinquish control. Not fully. Even if you are submissive, it is only so they will dote. In the end, you control everything. Have a plan, but be flexible. Seek to understand the man; it will help you understand what he desires. It will give you somewhere to start, to build from. And if anything goes in a way that displeases you, actively seek to work around it. You are never obligated to accept a customer’s advances, although if you will tell me, I will find someone else that will help him find satisfaction. It is your right to say no, to any customer at any time. He will have any money returned to him, but he does not have carte blanc on you. If he hurts you, there are many silent alarms that will bring help. Let me show you.”
*She walked around the room, pointing out the various levers and buttons that seemed to be in ever conceivable space.*
“This is a safe haven; we intend to keep it that way.”

*Virginia took the lesson in and said she understood, but retained her expression of confusion.*
"But supposing they are not violent and simply...normal. Wouldn't I just let them have what they've paid for and...that's it? Do I speak at all? What if they want me to do something different?"

*Sylvia half-nodded in acknowledgement of the question.*
“There is a rare occasion when the requirements are so simple. But you have to remember, there are no common whores here. If that was all a man was looking for, he could find it cheaper elsewhere. We service complex men with expensive tastes. They want to be seduced, to have their minds stimulated as well as their nethers. And there are some that are looking for certain fetishes that may not be served elsewhere.”
*Her mind drifted to Mondego for a moment and a smile fleeted across her lips.*
“Quite often they will expect you to hold conversation, if not during the act, then surrounding it. And they expect you to be well versed and polite, educated and intriguing. That is why there is a vast library in the house. Much of our time is spent in studies, furthering our own knowledge.”
*She paused for a moment, realizing.*
“Can you read?”

*Virginia brightened at the prospect of learning, and nodded.*
"English, French, Greek and Latin. I can speak a little German, too. ((Oh God don't ask her to, though. Because her typist can't.))"
*She leaned her chin on her fist and sighed.*
"If I hadn't gone into the convent I should have liked to go to university--if they'd allow girls to go. The Church was my next best option, but the library we had was rather narrow in scope and focus. Biology and other modern sciences were deemed inappropriate and unGodly. I read theology and some philosophy. And horticulture, when they had it. I love flowers."

*Sylvia smiled warmly, taking Virginia’s hand.*
“I’m glad to hear that you are so interested. It will be a benefit to you. Would you like to take a break and study something else for a while? I don’t want to tire you.”

*Virginia smiled and nodded.*
"What kind of books do you have?" *she asked, dropping all traces of the would-be seductress, leaving her with simple and girlish eagerness at the thought of all those lovely books.*

*Sylvia looked her over playfully.*
“Why, Virginia! I never knew you could be so…insatiable. I hope we can keep you entertained; we have one of the finest private collections in Paris. Would you like to see it?”
