*A man rushed past Virginia over the threshold of the door, and she followed the retreating and shadowed figure with puzzled eyes for a moment before turning back to the kitchen, only to see her beloved childhood friend who had been closer than a sister lying still upon the flooded floor of the kitchen, soaked through with water and the hot blood that still streamed from her slit throat. Virginia heard screaming somewhere far off, becoming louder, finally realizing that it was herself.* "Faye!" *She sank to her knees beside her friend, tugging the corpse into her lap, pushing the wet hair from the closed eyes. Faye's limbs bobbed like the branches of a snow-laden cedar, and as the water pipe's flow slowed to a quiet trickle, all was hushed within the kitchen save for Virginia's gut-wrenching sobs as she pressed her lips to Faye's forehead and tried to think of a prayer. Her eyes closed for a moment, then flew open as she recalled the stranger who had rushed out, barely seen before he disappeared.* "Murderer! Murder!" *she keened wildly, rocking the body of her best friend back and forth.*

((To Faye- this is the set up for plot. Your ghost is not required to intervene.))
*Irene scowled at the crime scene. The area had been roped off, although rubbernecks still crained to see into the murder room. It made her sick, the way these people fed off tragedy.
She traced the steps the killer must have taken. Most likey, he'd gotten the knife from Faye herself, set out on the tabel. It was a rush job, with a very impulsive killer.*
"Alright, boys", *she said to the other officers*. "Let's get in a bit deeper."

((Huh. Turns out there's two kitchen threads. Didn't even realize))
**NEW DAY**
Skipping happily into the room, Fenris made a beeline for the back door, intending to head for the kennels. He was only halfway across the kitchen when a sharp pain hit him. He stopped in his tracks, whimpering. The pains wouldn't stop, however, and in an effort to escape them he tried to hide in the corner next to a cupboard.

Sirius skidded into the room, hearing Fenris' pained whimper. He looked about and located him, trotting over uncertainly.

Fenris whined, glancing at Sirius miserably.
His whole body seemed to hurt, and no matter how he sat or lay down, nothing helped.
Fenris rested his head on his paws, feeling tired all of a sudden.

Fenris started to lift his head, when he suddenly flopped limply onto the floor, unconscious.
And then, something strage happened.
The puppy, who hadn't been anything but a puppy thus far, changed shape from canine to human.
In the place of the husky pup, there was now a dark-haired human baby.

Sirius backed up, whining and blinking at the strange change. It seemed he'd seen something as it happened, something not quite there, and it confused him. Like a shimmer. He'd seen the babies who lived there--from a distance--but he didn't know what to make of this one. It smelled like Fenris. Sort of. He had to think about it, which was hard (but getting easier as he grew). But it was exactly as though this new being smelled like Fenris would--as a human.
Which made no sense. But smell trumped vision in a dog's mind, and everything was telling Sirius that this was the pup he knew. So after a moment, he stepped forward again, his tail set low but wagging, and licked the baby's face experimentally in the hopes it was reassuring.

Fenris blinked confusedly at Sirius, not understanding what had just happened. Everything felt...strange. He was himself, but his muscles seemed to all be different now, and when he moved, his body responded to the cue differently.
And his tail was gone!
"Ah!" He cried, in a voice not his own. Worse yet, it wasn't a bark.
Experimentally, he moved his new hand and grabbed at Sirius.

Fenris caught at Sirius's ear and the puppy yelped and then, instinctively, growled. It was not a sound he'd made before, and it scared him a little, as much as the grabbing had. He jumped back with a low whine, his tail lower than ever as he stared at the strange creature that was still sort of but not quite his friend.

Hearing the yelp, and wondering where the pups had got to, Cry-Baby made it into the kitchen to see a mighty strange sight.
"Another one?" he muttered. "What's this, Sirius?" Stupid name for a dog, he thought. He'd bet Kris had named it. "Someone leave another baby in our... kitchen?"
The pup looked up at him, wagging his tail fitfully and looking for all the world like he was trying to tell him something. The dog glanced at the baby and back, but couldn't for the world figure out how to tell the big person that the little person was really a dog.

Fenris recognized Cry Baby. Hoping for a better response (he hadn't meant to do...whatever had happened...to Sirius!) he headed toward Cry Baby, crawling with an odd, jerky movement.

Sirius was whining, which was strange, and the baby seemed pretty glad to see Cry-Baby. He crouched down and scooted over to the kid, reaching out to scoop him up.
"How'd you get here, buddy?" he asked gently, his manner familiar and calming. He'd had some practice, after all. "Don't you worry 'bout Sirius. Won't hurt ya."
