"Literally," he said, with a lopsided grin.
"But as you can see, I survived."

"I think I need more medicine... I need to sleep." Talking to László was encouraging and all, but his brain was barely functioning, thoughts thick and heavy.

Seeing his weariness, László nodded.
"Okay. I'll tell them and let you rest."
He walked over to one of the nurses, telling her of Basini's request. She nodded and, after first checking on the boy, went to get something that would help him sleep.

(( New day! Or two. And then some. He's pretty worn out. ))
Doctors had been in and out, and the boy was awake again -- conscious but not very talkative. Only a little while after he first opened his eyes, he was asking where László was -- not his uncle, or his mother, but the man who had brought him in. In the infirmary bed he looked even smaller, and even paler.

For his part, László had been stopping by periodically to check on Basini and see how he was doing--having been the victim of a vampire bite twice before, he knew just how out of it one could be just from blood loss alone. Once you got into the emotional trauma, it just became worse.
He didn't mind being asked for--how often did that happen?--and soon enough he was in the room once again. He felt slightly alarmed (Basini looked so pale), but tried not to show it.
"How are you holding up?"

The boy licked his lips. Astonishing how dry his mouth was, and how the words that had been queuing up to be said all got caught on his teeth and his tongue before he could. But this was László, the stranger who had been singing, and he wanted nothing more than for him to be his friend.
"Well enough," he said, a little hoarsely but brightly. "I'm up! I can't walk, or I'd want to go home..."

He smiled softly.
"Well, they tell me that you'll be able to get out of here soon. So you won't be trapped in a hospital bed forever."
Seeing Basini lick his lips, László turned to a handy water jug.
"Do you need a drink?"

"Everyone here is terribly kind," he said, thinking of another infirmary staffed by less competent hands. "I--" And then a cough seized him, answering László's question, more or less. "I'd like that. Please."

"I've learned that at least in here, people are very good to each other."
He brought a glass of water over to Basini.
"Here you go."

His grimace on recovering his breath was rather unpleasant. Blanched gums and crooked boyish teeth.
"Thanks."
The silence was heavy as Stefan struggled to remember where his train of thought had been. He needed to ask something, yes, there had been something. Where Uncle Brandt was? Where was there to go but back to the abandoned dormitory? The thought and its associations made him dizzy and he shied away from them.
"... you didn't get in trouble, did you?"

"Trouble? What do you mean?"
The only real trouble with vampires, he figured, was surviving a meeting with one. Once you had that, you were pretty clear, at least in his experience.

"When you brought me in. Or did I imagine it?"
The worst possible scenario involved his uncle finding out and László being blamed somehow. The possibility of the police getting involved didn't even occur to him.

"Nothing happened. They just wanted to know how you got hurt, I said you were attacked, is all."
His expression became a bit more concerned.
"Why? He didn't threaten to come back, did he?"

He blinked in alarm.
"He was very civil," Stefan mumbled. "I don't think-- do they do that?"

"Civil?" He said incredulously. "I'd hardly call what he did that.
And...sometimes, they do. Usually to hurt you more and worse."
That part he only knew from talking to others, as thankfully that one that had landed him in jail hadn't made another appearance.
