*Alex raised an eyebrow, aware she'd stepped into something where young Shadi was concerned.*
"Dare I trust that you are about to propose one?"

*Rochester gave a side glance.*
“And what kind of libertine would I be if I did not? We have both been put out of sorts and that simply won’t do. Perhaps if we practiced something…more familiar…”
*He ran one hand up her thigh invitingly.*
“We might both feel a bit like our old selves again.”

"Naughty thing," *she protested through her smile,* "tempting me into playing for the other team."
*She arched against his hand anyway.*
"Though you do know what it takes to get me out of the doldrums. I accept."
*She pulled down on his cravat so she could kiss him.*
"Stay in, or go out?"

*Rochester kept his lips close to hers.*
"Well...we are already here..."
*He kissed her softly before a mischievous grin blossomed.*
"But I'm willing to indulge you in your preference, since you're the one that's stuck sacrificing your ideals about how the other half live."

*Alex chuckled.*
"There's nothing 'ideal' about it. And I don't think I could stir myself to be... to go out."
*She'd been about to say, 'to be interested in other girls,' but that sounded ridiculous even in her head. Good lord, she wasn't about to settle down with anyone, let alone a bit of a girl she hardly knew. She pulled Rochester down on top of her, where she still lay sprawled in the armchair.*

*Rochester laughed happily and kissed her as he loomed over her on the chair. She really was so sweet. Hopefully that girl would figure it out. His fingers deftly loosened her cravat and moved down to the buttons of her shirt.*
"Then I'm more than happy to keep you in all night..."

((I find the image of Alan Cumming "looming" over anyone humorous.))
*Alex chuckled.*
"Tell me the truth; you just like me because you know how the buttons work."
*She squirmed out of her shirt.*
"It's alright; I only like you because you wear lipstick better than any woman I've met."

((Indeed. )) "Ill-matched..." *Rochester grinned and nuzzled her neck as he ran his hand over her bared skin.* "Perfectly so. I cannot tell you what a delight it is to meet someone in the middle. You are one in a million, old chap." *He kissed her passionately. It was true. There was something perfect about sharing something with someone just as ambiguously gendered as he was. Safe. Comfortable. And yet exciting.*

*Alex laughed and playfully slapped him. She felt so... relaxed with him. Herself. Was she ever herself, really? Oh, she didn't play games, really; but if the facade she presented was false, did that make her actions, however true to character, somewhat false as well?
No matter; now was not the time. She twisted, upsetting the box of strawberries, and laughed again as she pulled Rochester's half-buttoned shirt over his head.*
"Then that makes two of us."
*FADE OUT*

***FADE IN***
*Rochester grinned contently and pull Alex close to him as the both rested in the heavy chair. That was what he needed. He had managed to almost forget Shadi for a few blissful moments. It was a blessed reprieve. He hoped it had helped Alex as well. He spoke softly, stroking her skin.*
"There now, isn't that better? I know it did me a world of good."

*She smiled against him.*
"Rather. Thank you. Oh Rochester, what are we going to do with each other? That is, what that we haven't already done?"
*She twisted around to face him.*
"At least we have a miracle cure for what ails us."

*Rochester grinned and sighed contentedly.*
"That we do, darling. And I, for one, don't plan on giving it up anytime soon."
*He squeezed her gently, trying to let her know that no matter how dark things got for either of them, they could always comfort one another. People like them needed to stick together. He kissed the top of her head.*
"Are you read to head upstairs then? Or should I make us some supper?"

"Goodness, I couldn't eat now."
*She gestured to the remnants of the strawberries.*
"Care for some company, tonight?"

*Rochester's eyes darkened for a moment but he brushed off his concerns with a grin.*
"I will always welcome your kind of company, old chap. Although I'm afraid I haven't been sleeping well. I'd hate to keep you from getting your rest."

*She eyed him shrewdly.*
"I suppose if I asked what was keeping an old degenerate like you from your rest, you'd tell me it's none of my business?"
*She stood up, smiling so he'd know she wasn't put out.*
"I'll stay with you, if you like. I can handle a few kicks to the shins. But if you'd rather not, I'm easy that way, too."
