Alexander carried Raoul's corpse up the steps and into the house. Half a dozen servants stared at him in horror, but no one said anything as he placed the neatly bound body, wrapped in two heavy cloaks, on a long, low bench in a quiet room just off the main hallway.
He stood looking down at Raoul for a moment, but there were no more words. Everything he needed to say had been said, and there was no time for regrets.
He had to stop Nadir.
Bending, he touched his lips to Raoul's forehead, and then went out the way he came.

*Rochester entered silently, removing his hat. Although not close friends with the Vicomte they had been aquaintances and spent time together in his previous trips to the city. He had been shocked when he heard of the death and decided to pay his respects. However noticing the young woman he knew as the Vicomte wife he sighed and turned to go. He could not injure her further with his presense.*

As I walked in, I was surprised to find myself surpressing tears. But why? Raoul had been a thorn in my side since the day we met, and by rights I should have been happy to see him go. And yet...

Rose entered quietly, her skirts rustling. There was no denying that the parting between Raoul and herself had not been amicable, and she had fought a mental battle over the decision to come. Despite all that had passed between them, she felt she owed it to at least pay her respects at his funeral.

I glanced in Rose's direction, and offered a sympathetic smile. She had been through so much, she did not deserve this.

*Seeing the woman turn to go Rochester felt an overwhelming desire to approach her.He clenched his fist and walked over to her. *I am sorry for your loss Madame. *He gazed down at her curiously trying, not for the first time to get the measure of her.*

*Virginia glanced back at the other woman mourners, who looked sincerely sorry for the loss Virginia did not feel.* "Don't be..." *she murmured, her face carefully kept blank.*
