((For all our cowboys and outlaws...))
*Kate downed a shot of whiskey, ignoring the dance hall girls*

*Jake strolled in with a grin. Now this was his kind of place. He made his way up to the bar and ordered a shot of whiskey, tipping his hat to the woman next to him.*
"Howdy, ma'am."

*She smiled and tipped her hat*
"Howdy back at ya."

*Jake took his whiskey and gave the woman the once over before shooting it back. Setting the glass on the bar, he gave her a grin and he wiped his hand on the back of his jeans and offered it to her.*
"Jake Quinn. Nice to find someone that's as far aways from home as me. Where 'ya from, Miz...?"

"Barlow. Kate Barlow."
*Hopefully he hadn't heard of her- or if he had, wasn't on the right side of the law himself*
"I'm from Texas myself."

"Likewise."
*Jake shifted to rest his elbow on the bar, half-turned to her still grinning.*
"So, Miz Barlow, what's a nice girl like 'ya doing all the way on this side of the ocean?"

*She gave a half-smile at that*
"Maybe it's cause I'm not such a nice girl. You?"

*Jake laughed and ordered a second shot.*
"Don't worry. I ain't a nice girl either."
*He turned back to her.*
"Work down at the Opera, muhself."

Better than being a train robber.
"Opera, huh? I used to be into that sort of genteel stuff, back when I was a school teacher."
*She put down her glass*
"And what brings you all the way out here?"

*Jake sobered for a moment. He'd walked right into that one. He fought to keep his smile.*
"Fresh start, same job. Tendin' horses. Good enough work though. How 'bout yerself?"

*What the hell. He was bound to find out eventually*
"Trouble with the law, to be honest."

*Jake looked at her in slight disbelief.*
"Really? Girl like you? Caught up with the law?"
*He grinned, nodded and shot his whiskey.*
"Why not?"
*He glanced at her, intrigued.*
"What for, if I m'ght ask? Just seems pretty thing like yerself, gotta be a good story in there."

*A good story? Well, she supposed it was pretty interesting to outsiders*
"Well, I ain't claiming to be a victim. I chose this road, now I gotta walk it. But the way it started wasn't entirely my fault."
*Kate thought back to Sam*
"I told you I used to be the schoolmarm. Well, someone saw me in the empty classroom, kissing a freedman. The twonspeople...well, let's say they overreacted."

*Jake's brow lifted and he swallowed.*
"Over-reacted? That don't sound good."

"It wasn't."
*She considered how to put it*
"Apparantly, the penalty in Green Lake, Texas, for a black man and a white woman kissing is to burn down her school house and shoot him."
