*Valerie cocked her head to one side. This was interesting.*
"What kinds of things start happening?"

"Accidents. Violent quarrels. I'll lodge with a man and in a week he'll have been stabbed by his ex-wife. Once or twice would have been a coincidence, but so many times..."
*His voice was matter-of-fact*
"The family home back in England is alone for miles. People who built houses nearbye would usually regret it."

*Valerie's eyebrows shot up.*
"Fascinating."
*She put down the pile of papers with a thud and a rising cloud of dust.*
"I pulled everything I could find on curses--although some of it's hard to make out. The paper quality has deteriorated somewhat."

*Roman glanced over the papers. There wasn't much he hadn't seen before, except-*
Wait a moment...
"Thank you very much", *he said as he took the paper over to a table, pulling one in particular to the top.*

*Giles stared after the young man for a moment, then returned to his office in silence. Valerie took her cue from her boss and tried to get back to work, but found her gaze drawn to the man silently poring over the manuscripts and papers.*
"...find anything?" *she said at last, her hushed tone breaking the silence of the library.*

*Roman quickly put away the paper.*
"Yes, thank you."
*He began to walk off, in a hurry*
((In case you forgot, he's learned he'll have to do some other favor for the evil entity his family was sold to. Valerie can look at the books and figure this out, or one of your evil characters can step in as the bad guy.))

((...do I HAVE a supernaturally evil character? ...Thatcher's immortal and a cat by day but has no real power to change others...))
*Valerie watched him leave, but lingered a while at her work. Indeed, it was quite some time later when she went to clear the table of papers and noted the one he'd been looking at. A frown creased her brow.*
"...a curse...a pact...to--"
*The peace of the library broke on her sharp intake of breath.*
"Dieu!"
*She raced out of the library, hardly knowing where he would go to look. A church? Hardly. A cemetery, perhaps.*

"...you know the answers already, Valerie," *said Giles softly, looking up at her for the first time.* "There's nothing to bring the powers back. Be grateful you can lead a normal life."

*Valerie rolled her eyes.*
"I just want to gather all the weapons I may have in my armoury, so to speak. There has got to be a way to end the curse upon the Frye family, and I'm going to help him find it."

"You say there has to be a way because you want there to be a way, Valerie. Wanting something won't make it so."

"Don't lie to me, Giles--I lost my powers, not my reason. I was smart BEFORE I was a Slayer."
*She leaned over his desk.*
"I saw things...experienced things--even for the short while I was a Slayer, I came to know that nothing is impossible; in good or evil. There's a way out of the curse, and you know it, and you're not telling me."
