"Valerie--" *he sounded exasperated.* "Even were you still a Slayer it would be with misgivings I'd let you go off on some..."
*He broke off and rubbed his forehead.*
"It's too dangerous."

"Letting him continue under the curse is dangerous. You heard him describe it--it will harm those around him! Unless he condemns himself to living under a rock miles from anywhere, people WILL get hurt, Giles!"
*She took off her glasses and began cleaning them with a bit of her skirt.*
"He doesn't deserve this," *she mumbled.*

*Giles looked at her silently for a long time before he stood with a sigh and unlocked a deep drawer in a tall wooden cabinet in one corner of his office. Digging to the bottom, he came up with a leather pouch, which he handed to Valerie.*
"I'm not certain he deserves you," *he reflected quietly, then jerking his head towards the door.*
"Good luck, Valerie. And I'd be a grinning idiot if I didn't add that this is most likely goodbye, as well."

"Think that, if you like," *she said flippantly, quashing the sudden surge of nausea she felt.* "You won't get rid of me that easily."
*Suddenly, she flew round the desk and gave Giles a big hug.*
"Thanks, Giles."
*A moment later, she was gone.*

**NEW DAY**
*Roman was back at the library, having resigned himself to finding a new solution*

*Valerie found Roman back in the occult section.*
"Wrong spot," *she said.* "We need geography, now. And maybe something on myths. How much do you know about sphinxes?"

"Greek or Egyptian?"

"Greek. Thebes, to be exact. A correct answer to a riddle can compel the sphinx to allow one to pass by it and into the city by a certain gate--or less well-known--to swallow a curse. A wrong answer...well, we'll be swallowed instead."

*Roman smiled wryly*
"Is it too much to hope that it'll be the same riddle as the one in stories?"
|

"Most likely," *said Valerie.* "If it were that easy, people would be wandering around carrying a curse just so long as they liked--to get whatever benefit, if any, then popping off to Thebes to get it removed. A curse would be hardly more serious than a wart."

*He nodded*
"Purely out of curiosity, why are you helping me?"

*She shrugged.*
"I work in a library, and my days as a Slayer are over. Unfortunately, my brief tenure as such gave me a taste for adventure I'm finding more and more difficult to satisfy these days. Humour me, will you?"
*She tilted her head to one side with a grin, ready to plead if she had to.*
"I have some savings to help us get there--and I could sublet my flat while we were away. But really--if part of the curse means you're fantastically wealthy, well, wouldn't it just be delicious to burn those ill-gotten gains on curing what ails you?"

**NEW DAY, POST-AZULA-CONFRONTATION**
*Shaken by his encounter with his sister and worried that he had no idea where he was, he concurred it would be a smart idea to go to the library. After awkwardly asking some people who were giving him funny looks, he had located one and was currently looking around.*
*He had no idea where to start. At all. And it showed.*

*Rachel couldn't help but notice him and had to keep herself from staring. Pushing her glasses further up her nose, she tried to read her book on pediatric hematology-- not that any of the material in there was remotely accurate.
Figuring that he could possibly use the help, she gave up.*
"Do you need some help?" *she asked, polite yet curt as she took her glasses off her face.*

*He turned, his bearing quite kingly as he looked down at her. That wasn't so much purposeful as he was just kind of taller than she was. At least she looked normal, he remarked to himself. Perhaps she knew something, and maybe... no. No, he didn't need help. He'd find the answers himself.*
"I'm fine, thank you." *He said, his voice raspy as usual. He was courteous and polite, but... well, proud. As always.*
