"There was a time I had nothing to fear from anyone. Or anything," *she said with a weak smile, a note of sadness in her low voice.* "If you'll excuse me...I should be getting back to work."
*She finished with the books she held and went back to her desk, sliding her glasses down to her nose so she could go over the list of books that were overdue. Inwardly, she sighed. She was grateful to be alive. She was grateful to be normal. But she still missed some parts of being a Slayer. Giles was still kind, still her boss, but he had ceased to teach her about those subjects she had so become fascinated by. She didn't need them, or him, anymore.*

Intriguing...
*Roman followed Valerie over to the desk*

*Valerie penciled some notes in the margin of the giant ledger on her desk and focused her gaze on the page. She glanced up briefly, meeting Roman's gaze for a moment before she cleared her throat lightly and dropped the pencil.*
"Right. I'll just...go get Giles...see if he's in...yet..."

*So he was making her nervous. Well, sexual harassment was about as much as he was still able to get.*
"Take your time."

*Valerie disappeared down a hallway to the back offices, knocking lightly on Giles' door.*
"Someone to see you," *she called through the oak panel. There was a shuffle, a small crash, and then the head librarian appeared in the doorway.*
"Mmm?"
*She jerked her thumb over her shoulder.*
"Garcon at the front desk wants some more archaic texts on the occult. He seems to have more than a common interest in the subject. Didn't even glance at the usual merde about love potions and curses to make one's hair fall out."
*Giles' brow furrowed.*
"Well...I'll go talk to him, and you start on that section in the archives. See what you can pull for him. I'll check if he seems legitimate."
*Valerie nodded and returned to the front desk with Giles, only to retrieve the key to the archives and disappear into them, shutting the door behind her as Giles sized up the younger man.*
"...I understand you take an interest in the occult, monsieur?"

"I do. Curses in particular."
*So she hadn't simply been making an excuse to get away- there was an older expert.*

((Oh no, I'm supposed to play an expert?))
*Giles stroked his chin.*
"Hm. I see. Now, do you already have a target in mind, or were you just looking for something to keep in mind for later, just in case?"

"You misunderstand me. I don't wish to cause a curse but to cure one."

"Ah. Would that be a single curse or a recurrent curse?"

"What would you consider violent death passed on through the generations?"

*Roman leaned forward, and his voice lost its lazy tone*
"Look, I'm going to be frank with you- I don't know how much time I have. Maybe a year, maybe more- all my life I've been trying to find a cure, and I haven't."

*Valerie had returned with a piece of paper in her hand where she'd scribbled reference numbers, a stack of manuscripts and loose papers bound together with ratty old string balanced on her other arm. She frowned slightly.*
"...how would you know when the curse is broken? When you...don't...die?"

"It isn't just me!"
*He sighed*
"Evil follows me. You two should be safe since I've only been here a few hours, but when I'm with someone for too long, things happen to them. Though I imagine you'll want some proof that I'm not just crazy."
