*Roman was back once again, leafing through some ancient book in a language very few still remembered existed.*

*Valerie shoved her glasses backwards, to rest atop her head as she shelved the returned books. She glanced idly at the volume the young man had spread open before him on a nearby table, then cocked her head to the side as a puzzled frown creased her brow. No one had touched that book in the three years she'd worked at the library, and she knew all of the titles by heart. Though she'd schooled herself in Spanish, English, Latin, Italian, German and Greek as well as her native French, she recalled that that book in particular had eluded her comprehension.* ((Timeleap. Let's say she's nineteen, now?))
"What's it about?" *she asked curiously, not even needing to look as her hands continued putting away the other books in their proper order.*

*Roman didn't raise his eyes*
"It's an old Arabic text on forms of black magic. It's a bit hard to read, I'll admit- the pages haven't stood the test of time."

"...would this help?" *she pulled a magnifying glass from the pocket of her work apron and held it out to him.* "And the light isn't greatest, there. There's another table along the south wall with a window nearby. Just near the front desk."

*He looked up, smiling a bit*
"Thank you, Miss..."
*He waited for her name.*

"Valerie..."
*She half-smiled awkwardly, shifting the load of books in her arms.*
"Er--Lambert. Valerie Lambert."

*He reached out to stop a book from falling*
"Roman Frye."

*Valerie let out a breath of a laugh as she took the book from his hand.*
"Thank you, Monsieur Frye."

*He walked over with her to the desk she'd mentioned*
"How much do you know about older books? I don't mean first editions and such, but truly old."

"We generally don't keep our ancient manuscripts out in the open for sunlight and grubby fingers to paw over, but if you have a special request I can check the archive room."
*Damn. Even talking about the archive room still made her feel queasy.*

"Perhaps. You see, I'm interested in a few works on the occult- and modern day texts seem to be for thrill seekers and people who think such things are about healing the universe."

*Valerie pursed her lips.*
"My knowledge of the field is limited, but my former mentor may be able to help you. His name is Giles--he's the head librarian here. Spends most of his time in his office, though."

"Well, I suppose I could wait until he comes in."
*Roman smiled again. She really was an attractive girl, and under different circumstances he might have done something about it*

*Valerie nodded slowly, hugging the pile of books a mite tighter than she needed to, her glasses slipping to sit at an odd angle atop her head.*
"I'll send him over when I see him. He should be in any time."

"You seem nervous, Miss Lambert. I assure you, you have nothing to fear from me."
