*Jake rode up to the opera on a pure white storm-black pale-gold palomino chestnut mare with an even temper, wearing a nice-looking black suit with a blue shirt and a black vest along with a neat black Stetson. He worried he looked a bit too funereal, but these were the nicest duds he could come by.*

Diana carefully made her way down the steps of the opera house, thankful that she could finally get away from work. She felt so strange to be out of her nurse's uniform and showing skin. The evening breeze played with her curls... which took her FOREVER to get right.
Diana looked over and gasped as she saw the horse. "You didn't have to!" she said, petting the mare's nose.

*Jake dismounted easily and tipped his hat to her.*
"But I wanted to," *he said, grinning as he gripped her waist to lift her into the saddle.*
"'Sides...carriages can't get where we're goin'."

"Where exactly are we going?" Diana asked with a laugh. "Or is it a surprise?"

"Ev'rythang's a surprise, in the end," *he said with a vague philosophical air as he swung up into the saddle behind her and reached around her to take hold of the reins.*
"Hold on," *he said in a low voice as he guided the mare into a gentle walk towards a wooded area near the river.*

Diana immediately embraced him as the horse began to move; she was never good with heights.
"I'm Diana, by the way," she said quietly as she tried not to seem too freaked out. "I guess with all the commotion, we forgot to formally introduce ourselves."

"Jake Quinn."
*He laughed softly.*
"You must think me some kinda barbarian. I swear I got me some manners somewheres...darned if I kin find 'em when I need 'em, though."

Diana smiled. "Trust me, you're not. I work with one. I should know," she said with a sigh.

"But you like what you do to make a livin'? You stick around anyhow?" *he glanced at her with an inquiring look.*

Diana nodded. "But I don't want to talk about work," she said, taking a look at the scenery. "Tell me about you. What did you do growing up?"

*Jake shrugged.*
"All I ever knew was horses. My daddy owned--owns--a ranch down in the south of Texas, near the panhandle. You from the States? I mighta had you pegged for a Yankee but there's something diff'rent 'bout your accent..."
