*Richard was entirely uncertain as to his motives, which was highly unusual for him. He knew he wanted Lady Anne, and had set things in motion in order to get her. Even if they had not yet come to fruition. But this... He had no hope of winning the girl, and wasn't even convinced he wanted to. And she was of no political use to him.
But he did not want her surrender. He wanted her bite. It stirred him on. This state in her was most disappointing.*
"Do you require solitude for your recovery, or is that perhaps the reason for your malaise?"

*Beatrice could not find the words to explain it, clenching her fists as she sought them. In frustration she stood again, and started to pace. She spoke, but not necessarily at Richard in particular.*
"Alas! How be it that a man be not a man but that which cannot have a place anywhere but the deepest pits? And how can he hath laid my ears and ears to such tortures? Could it not yet still be but a trick of the light? Some matter of chicanery?"

*Richard recoiled. For certain she described him; she saw his deformity, his lack of grace, his mean exterior, and like all others had assumed the worst.
Had assumed what he knew to be true, in his heart of hearts.
He had not banked on her boldness going this far.*
"I had not thought my feeble attempts at wit could so offend, milady," *he said, his voice guttural.* "Alas, my words are as rude as my form, and as little liked. But to so revile me to mine own face! Your words strike true, though I cannot think what I have done to deserve them. Be that as it may, this is not my house, and as I can take my leave of it without dishonor I leave the field to you."

*Beatrice was drawn from her deep contemplation and she looked up at him confused.*
"Your house, sir?"
*She shook her head.*
"Forgive me, your Grace. I have been tortured this day in a manner I was ill-expecting. Ne'er in my life have I beheld such a thing."
*She turned away from him.*
"But you would think me mad. And perhaps that I might still yet be, for a scare believe it myself."

*He stared at her for a moment in almost comical confusion.*
"You... do not speak of myself, do you?"

*Beatrice scrunched her nose.*
"Of course not, my lord. Why would I have cause to say such of thee?"

*Did she mock him? He grimaced.*
"It is not often that humanity does not find cause to remark upon my hateful physique; but if you did not, it is no matter. I merely... No matter. Pray, what have you seen to make yourself doubt your own credibility?"

*Beatrice's gaze cooled. Was he trying to make this about him? She arched a brow.*
"Why, your Grace, I find it ill measure to weigh a man on the shape of the pot God hath thrown for him. It is what he keeps inside it that the Almighty shall judge, and I see no reason to allow myself swayed by any other matter."
*She looked her old self for certain.*

*Sebastian shimmered into the garden, hidden from sight behind a big oak tree. He spotted Beatrice talking to a man who seemed awfully familiar to him. Parts of the conversation reached his ears. tortured this day in a manner I was ill-expecting. Ne'er in my life have I beheld such a thing.* Why thank you.

*Richard bowed his head slightly.*
"Forgive me, madam; for many a God-fearing Christian has seen fit to do just that, and my skin, rough as it is, can sometimes still be thin. I mistook your meaning; and I am well aware you are quite capable of taking it back."

"Capable, yes, that is certain."
*Beatrice's lips tightened a moment.*
"But willing is another matter. Have it be that you are so enamored with your own purpose that you will not see others for their own?"

*Richard's face darkened.*
"When you have lived nigh thirty years with such a form, then may you pass judgment on another man's sensitivity. My deficiencies are bandied about without remorse by all and sundry; is it any wonder that I might be momentarily distracted by the selfsame words coming from your lips that have oft been employed against me? I realized my mistake and craved your pardon; what more would you have of me?"

*Beatrice's lips tightened. He had a point. She hated that. She lowered her eyes, but not her chin.*
"Then it is my turn to beg pardon, your Grace. Fate sees fit to place me in my own matter of defenses. I fear that the Graces hath not seen to soften mine edges."

"Your edges are not half so grotesque as mine," *he offered.* "I see no reason to lament them."

"I am not lamenting, sir. I am merely being your pardon for them. I am what I am. I have no desire to be otherwise."
*Beatrice arched her brow.*
"Would you seek to smooth me?"
