Marianne strolled through the Opéra gardens, the lightest of breezes playing with the tendrils of her hair and catching at her skirts. Her face was not so ashen as it once was and her color seemed to be somewhat recovered, although there were faint telltale shadows beneath her eyes. At her side walked a beautiful dog, one she had recently acquired and had already grown very attached to. She fondled the dog's ears absently as she stared up into the blue sky, a million thoughts meandering through her head, and not one of them making much sense. www.dogbreedinfo.com/images11/PharaohHoundTrinity.jpg

*Madame Giry sat on a low stone bench, a small bound ledger in her hand. With a pencil she made notations in the margins in a tight, fine script.*

Marianne stopped dead at the sight of Madame sitting on a bench. She wrapped the dog's leash around her hand and turned away silently, hoping she had not been spotted.

((So do you want to be seen or not?))

((This is the advantage of not being seen.
Sorry, random Monty Python moment that has no relevance to the scene. Of course she does, she can only wangst alone for so long...))

((Excellent.))
*Mme. Giry looked up as she heard a twig snap nearby, to see the Vicomtess turning to flee down the path she'd come by.* "Madame?" *she said in a querying tone.*

Marianne stiffened, and slowly turned around.
"Good day, Madame," she replied after a pause. Her tongue felt thick and useless in her mouth, and her grip tightened on the dog's leash as if it were a lifeline.

"Good day to you..." *Madame Giry paused, as if uncertain how to continue.* "I meant to speak with you in the near future--it is fortunate you should happen to pass by. Please, do sit down." *She moved on the bench to make room.*

Marianne eyed her warily, her body tensed as if for flight. Finally, she approached Madame, sitting carefully on the bench as if ready to jump up again.

"I wanted to apologize for being so...plain-speaking, the other day, when I explained what future circumstances will be for you. Undoubtedly it was a shock for you and I should have taken that into account before exposing it all so unexpectedly before you. I would beg your forgiveness for that, Madame," *she said in a solemn tone.*

Marianne nodded and bit her lip, avoiding Madame's eyes. She was afraid to allow her emotions to show there, for fear they would break loose like a flood gate.
Did she know...?

*Madame cocked her head, bright eyes flashing with keen awareness developed after being mother to thirty little girls for the past fifteen years.* "My dear, are you alright?" *she asked, her cold formality gone.*

Marianne nodded quickly. "Oh yes," she replied, her smile bright and false. "Everything's alright." But it's true... everything is alright. Nothing will have to change now.

"Is there anything you wish to tell me?" *asked Madame Giry slowly, noting the girl's face was livid with suppressed emotion.*
