Howl remained perfectly silent, patiently waiting for the girl to continue with her unfinished statement. When it appeared no other words were to be immediately spoken, Howl's mouth broke into a slight grin as he asked if he might possibly show the young woman around.

"Do you know this place any better than I do? I mean, I've got a guidebook, but considering everyone's speaking English, I'm starting to think that it's not going to do any good. If that makes any sense. Which it probably doesn't. Ugh, I'm rambling."

Howl's grin curled farther up his lips, handsomely illuminating his countenance.
"I believe I know it well enough," he chuckled. The movement shook the seemingly delicate piece of jewelry in his ear. "Is there any one place that you are searching for, in particular?"

"Well, a way back to reality would be nice..."
She paused and looked at him again. Damn, he was pretty.
"I'm sorry- I'm taking my frustrations out on you, and you didn't do anything."
Who was he?

Howl gently shook his head, setting his earring--and his flaxen hair--into motion yet again.
"No, no," he denied, lightly shutting his eyes. "You've done nothing wrong." After some seconds had ticked by, Howl's face slightly darkened, and he bowed his head as if a terribly grave error had been committed.
"Forgive me, where are my manners?"

"I'm the one who's been rude," she said, laughing self-consciously.

Howl, determining that there was no real danger present in revealing his true identity, bowed low before the young woman.
"I am the wizard Howl," he proudly declared.

Megan's eyes got big.
"Oh my God-"
She took a nervous, giggly step backward, turning pink in the face and wishing she'd read the book more recently.
"It's, um, nice to meet you, um, Howl. My name's, um, Megan."

A distraught expression slithered across Howl's countenance as he misinterpreted Megan's reaction. Frowning, he contemplated the possibility that perhaps, just perhaps, he had been wrong to give himself away.
Give it time, he instructed himself. And keep a watchful eye on her.
"It certainly is a pleasure, Megan," Howl smiled. "It would appear that you've heard of me or are familiar with my reputation?"

"Yeah, in a manner of speaking," she said uncomfortably.

Howl furrowed his brow, and anxiety etched deep lines into his youthful forehead.
"What do you know of me?" he pressed.

That you're supposed to be fictional, for one thing. And you're not actually blond.
"Things," she said, shrugging awkwardly.

"I see," Howl nodded.
"Well, my dear Megan," he said, sharply steering the course of their conversation away from the matter of his reputation. "I did promise that I would show you around Paris, did I not? And I presently shall."
Howl, brushing aside his bangs from his glass marble-like eyes, offered an arm to Megan.

Megan stared awkwardly. While she could remember that his supposed talent for stealing hearts was only metaphorically true, she still felt slightly apprehensive about accepting his offer.
