"You're coming with me." He said, tugging Adam's arm.

"What on earth--"
This man was beginning to frighten him perhaps a bit too late, and peaceful as the scene had been in fading light, the dark was hardly reassuring.
"I'll go with you if you like, but surely you aren't serious--"
Was this just what people did? Daniel's grip was curiously formidable, and Adam wasn't used to such treatment from anyone but a trusted authority.

"I've been nothing but! Yet you've been very indecisive and so, I am deciding for you."
He kept on going firmly and without harm pulling Adam along. He could be rougher, but only if there was any marked resistance.

Docile as a lamb, but privately agitated, Adam followed.

"You surprise me," he said, after they'd gone a good distance.
"I thought you would try to argue with me more."

"If you want me to accompany you so badly, I suppose I might humor you," he said, sounding more reasonable than he really felt. His heart was pounding. How ridiculous, what was there to fear-- from at worst a man who was sick.

Daniel laughed.
"Oh, dear boy, you really have no idea."

"You needn't be cryptic--"

"But, see, that's part of the fun. Seeing what you guess. Seeing how good that guess is."

"You're a strange fellow, did you know?"
That was probably the harshest assessment of anyone Adam had made in recent memory. He spoke with a tone of mildly frustrated superiority that was... rather blistering, actually.

Daniel laughed.
"You don't know the half of it."
They were off of church property now, and beginning to leave it behind.

The boy had begun to shiver, bare-handed and bare-headed. As the familiar shapes of the monastery grew indistinct behind them -- his eyes were ever darting back -- the sensation of uneasiness grew, of being off any sort of solid ground.
After a while longer, and a terse silence, he spoke cautiously. "I own nothing of value, Daniel."

"I'll have to politely disagree with you. Though, what's valuable to me isn't what's usually valuable to others."

"I have no extraordinary qualities."
Oh son y so oblivious.

Daniel stopped, glancing down at Adam for a very still moment before trailing his fingers through the boy's hair with his freehand.
"I wouldn't say so."
He continued onward.
