"To Rome, of course, and to the Holy City --" Finding himself in a continuing religious frame of mind, he halted.
"Really, I would go anywhere that would have me."

"I'm sure there are plenty that would have you."
You're talking to one.
"Well, consider this: I could take you anywhere you wanted to go. You'd just have to say when and where."

The boy's eyes lowered shyly.
"... are you poking fun at me, sir?"

"Hardly. I'm being entirely serious."
Oh, yes, serious--though it was mostly because he wanted to see how Adam would respond to such an offer.

"I couldn't possibly accept -- I'm here for my studies." Confusion was beginning to set in. The man had to be joking, but Adam could never tell, and it frustrated him.

"Are you certain about that? You did tell me that you would love to travel. Would really pass up the opportunity when it presents itself?"
He didn't really know where he was going with this, exactly. On the surface, sure, he was trying to see if the boy would actually leave with him but beyond that...
It had interesting potential, at least.

"Yes, but-- the Church is my only family. I'm not at liberty to go where I wish." This had to be some sort of exercise, some means of testing his resolve. But it wasn't a very kind one. Adam turned to look at him, dark eyes curious.
"The offer is very kind, but why would you make it?"

"Why would they be upset if you left, as long as you return? It's not as though you'd be going away forever."
He shrugged at Adam's question.
"I don't honestly know. But I can tell you it's not something I offer often."

The boy's cheeks colored a little. "I can't say if I would return," he said, with all appropriate guilt. "I mean, the distraction--"

That old, characteristic smirk of his appeared.
"Nothing wrong with that. There's so much more to life, it would be criminal not to experience it."

"It's a temptation," he said simply.

He somehow managed to resist rolling his eyes, and made it just barely.
"Hardly. How can it be? Cardinals and even regular priests travel to tend to the layperson. How is it temptation?"
Hmm. If the boy proved more stubborn about this than he'd judged, then he just might have to resort to a bit of force.

"It's-- it's more complicated than I can describe." Adam's tone grew surprisingly sharp, at least for him. "Let that be that. Though it's very kind of you--"

Well, that decided his course of action. He grabbed Adam's arm, his grip firm but not hurting...not yet.
"Complicated? How much so can it be? Come on, I insist you give it some serious thought."

Startled, the boy drew back.
"I'm afraid I don't understand--"
