Josephine noticed his reaction, but she assumed it was because he was afraid to touch her after what had happened...as though it might upset her further. It was understandable, really.
"I'm all right," she said, to reassure him. "I'm fine."

Gwynplaine was not, but she could not know that. He took a deep breath, afraid suddenly that he had forgotten how, and stepped back. He could not resist dipping his face to inhale softly the scent of her, the sweet clean smell of her hair, as he did so. But that was all--he would torture himself no further.
"Good," he said, trying to make his voice sound normal. "I... I should be very upset indeed, should something happen to you."

Can't possibly think of what worse could happen.
She smiled, a bit tightly thanks to that thought.
"Even if something does, I'll rise above it."

But it could have been worse, so much worse, and Gwynplaine knew that even if he refused to acknowledge it consciously.
"Of course," he said. "You're stronger than most people must think."

She straightened up a bit, smiling broadly.
"I like to think so."

"I know so," Gwynplaine said. "Now. Have you eaten anything today?"

"Oh, yes." She said faintly. "Soup."
At least, she remembered soup. Though from what point in time, she couldn't say for sure. But certainly, it had to be today.

"Good," he said, and hesitated. "If you... if you'd like something else, I would be happy to get you something." Not that he thought her helpless, but he felt so protective of her it was easy to seem he did.

She shook her head.
"Oh, no, I'm fine. I should probably get some practice in before it gets too late."

"Of course," Gwynplaine said. He didn't know how he'd made it through his own performances, worrying about her. "Can I help?"
But maybe she didn't want any more help. Maybe he was crowding her. He just couldn't tell, didn't know.

"I don't mind an audience, but I wouldn't want to endanger you--if I slip up, I can't say in what direction the knife would go."
She hadn't had such an accident in years, but she'd feel doubly bad about it if the first one in so long was one that harmed Gwynplaine.

"That's all right," Gwynplaine said, his smiling softly. "I'll keep a close eye."
His reflexes, after all, were pretty good.

She bit her lip a moment, considering. He was a juggler, after all, it wasn't as though he wouldn't be able to get out of the way--good reflexes.
She nodded.
"All right. I'll just go get the knives."
She turned and headed back into the trailer, to her room.

Gwynplaine waited outside, anxious. He didn't want to crowd her.
"If you'd rather not," he called in, somewhat timidly. "I won't be hurt if you'd like to be alone. I just thought..."

She returned shortly with the case that contained them.
"Oh, no, that's all right. In fact, I think you'd be one of the few to see me practice."
