After taking a scalding-hot shower and putting on a clean dress, Josephine tried to rest, utterly exhausted by what had happened earlier that day. But she couldn't. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't slow her thoughts down or block them out. And so, she jumped up, and started to compulsively clearning the place. Anything for a distraction.

Gwynplaine, having "failed" in his attempt at intimidating the Ringmaster, made his way back to Josephine's place. He would stand guard, for as long as it took for her to be safe.

Josephine did not come out, even for her show the following day. In her place they'd had tumblers come on to enterain the crowd, and eventually a more mundane juggler, though some rather unsatisfied customers left the show mumbling. They'd come to see the blind girl and the knives, after all.
Said blind girl, however, had barricaded herself in her trailer.

Gwynplaine had had to leave, to perform his own show. He didn't want to, but he'd pressed the odd, masked boy into service again.
When he returned, the child had informed him the women had not left. Or made a sound. Gwynlaine thanked him, gave him another coin, and refrained from patting him on the head. And then he knocked.
"Madmoiselle Josephine?" he called through the door. "Mademoiselle... you must eat."

There was a short scrabbling sound before the door was unlocked and only partially opened. Josephine, looking a bit wan, peered out Gwynplaine. She blinked for a moment in the afternoon light.
"Oh...what time is it?"
Ah, good. She actually sounded normal to her ears. That had to count for something.

Perhaps for someone else, it might have. But Gwynplaine was not fooled.
"You missed your performance," he said gently. "Mademoiselle... please. How can I help you?"
He had failed miserably last night. The only way he saw of making up for it was to ensure she wasn't hurt. To guard her against it.

She stared at him blankly for a moment, then paled.
"I...I missed? Oh, no...I've never missed! Not once!"
She started to wring her hands, realized what she was doing, and dropped them to her sides.
"I think I need help. Could you...walk with me when I need to go to my show?"

Gwynplaine wanted to grab her flailing hands, but stopped himself. It would startle her.
"It's all right," he said. "The spot was filled, and you have every reason..." He trailed off. He ought to have killed that mad man. "I can. I'd be happy to do anything you need."

She nodded, smiling just a little.
"I don't want to miss tomorrow. Come, and...knock. A...half hour before the show?"
She sounded uncertain, as though unable to remember what the normal prep times had been.

"Whenever you like," he said softly. "Josephine... Mademoiselle... may I get you anything else?"
He wanted so to be of use to her. And short of destroying that demon, he didn't know what that meant.

She hesitated a moment.
"Maybe...sometime, we can go somewhere? Away from here."
Some distance, yes. Maybe some distance from the circus would help.

Gwynplaine blinked.
"Right now? Certainly," he said, though he was wracking his brain trying to figure out where.

She turned a bit red.
"Oh! Not right this instant. I'm sure you have business already today. Tomorrow?"

He didn't, of course, but the fact that she assumed he did was flattering. He supposed.
"Tomorrow," he said. "That would be lovely, yes. Where would you like to go?"
Until then, he would guard her.

Far away from here.
"Well...I need a new dress..."
Bad subject
"But perhaps we could catch a show at a theater?"
