"No, it doesn't."
He quickly got to his feet, going over to Heike's table and holding out a hand.
"Thank you, miss, for you help."

Heike shook his hand, secretly thinking that he really shouldn't be thanking her, but cursing the fates.
"You're welcome, dear. Be careful on your way there, eh? Nasty neighborhood in-between."

"Oh, I'll be fine. I can take care of myself."
He was a vampire, after all. He turned to go, then stopped in his tracks and looked back at Heike with a rather sheepish smile.
"Er...how do I get to Charenton?"

Heike laughed pleasantly before giving him the directions.

Nodding, he once again turned to go. "Thanks again!" And was out the door .

She watched as he left, lips pursed in thought. He wouldn't be John by the time he got to Charenton, she could tell. Harris would revert back to Lucy somewhere along the way. Shrugging to herself, she finished her drink before departing .

**NEW NIGHT**
And, well enough, the russet-haired Armand had not been lying, although Eli, naturally, had seen no reason to suppose that he was. Eli might not have been a child any longer, but she thought like one, in ways. She trusted. And certainly she trusted a face as young and sweet and pretty as her own. Perhaps they'd been through something similar, after all. In any case, it had not taken many more nights before Eli started to see them around.
They were everywhere. Unnoticed, she watched them feed and laugh and do all sorts of things, in groups, on their own. There were so many of them. Eli was partially in awe, and partially on her guard. She didn't want to approach them; they seemed, despite evidence to the contrary, something different from herself, part of another world.
One night, however, she overheard speaking about a vampire club. Eli had to see that. She hadn't been to many clubs before and didn't know what to expect, but she had to move among them. And a club was not a dark alleyway. It wasn't going to be frightening like a dark alleyway might be. It might even have music. Didn't clubs? She wanted to go.
Outside the Kit Kat Klub, which looked like any other club, she paused around the door to peek in. Music inside, the kind of music she liked so much, the kind that had first been put out on the records. She was not certain if she could enter, though, because it was not like the library had been. No, she didn't know and didn't dare. A woman in a long fur coat swanned past her and when she bumped into Eli she looked surprised.
"Oh, lookit you, you little ragamuffin! You'd better scoot."
Eli stared up at her and did not 'scoot'. She curled her toes - still wearing no shoes - and said only, "Say I can come in."
The young woman stared. Her big eyes got a little bigger, and seemed to be a bit glassy.
"Well, of course you can't - "
Eli only blinked.
"Well, of course you can come in, but - "
That, however, as all Eli needed, and smiled at the woman, stroked her on the cheek and went in.
Sally Bowles, unsure of what in the world had quite just happened, put her hand to the chill on her cheek as though in near-shock and stared after the angelically pretty little child in the dismal clothing in great confusion.
Eli moved through the tables, drawing eyes from anyone who could bring themselves to look away from the women doing the suggestive dances currently on the stage, because children weren't supposed to come into clubs like these, until she found one that was unoccupied and sat, her back not towards the stage. She folded her long little hands in her lap after she'd readjusted the slipping shoulder of the too-large, too-uncomfortable knit sweater, and gazed around with eyes that, in the dim lighting of the cabaret, looked almost, faintly, to be glowing, to see who else was there.

As the number ended The Emcee came on stage with a grin that was all to knowing "Sank you! Sank you! Isn't she sexy? But I know somesink about herr sat you don't..." he giggled "vats under herr costume, reowwrr!" The crowd erupted in to hoots and hollers, they may have all been mostly all vampires, but they really had taken to the mortal on stage, his antics were disgusting and crude and entertaining.
Most of them would have found it rude to turn him in to one of them, he seemed to be having too much fun without the power.
Suddenly a song began to play and two people came on stage with the Emcee "Sis vone is a srow back to se old days, a fan and cast favor-ite!"
[GIRL 1] Beedle dee, deedle dee, dee!
[GIRL 2] Beedle dee, deedle dee, dee!

[DANCE]
[GIRLS] Ooh! Aah! Ooh! Aah!
[EMCEE] We switch partners daily To play as we please.
[GIRLS] Twosies beats onesies,
[EMCEE] But nothing beats threes. I sleep in the middle,
[GIRL 1] I'm left,
[GIRL 2] Und I'm right,
[EMCEE] But there's room on the bottom If you drop in some night.
[GIRLS] Beedle dee, dee dee dee...
[EMCEE] Two ladies. Beedle dee, dee dee dee...
[GIRLS] Two ladies. Beedle dee, dee dee dee, And he's the only man.
[ALL] Ja! Beedle dee, dee dee dee...

[EMCEE] They like it!
[GIRLS] Beedle dee, dee dee dee...
[ALL] This tow for one. Beedle dee, deedle dee, deedle dee, Deedle dee, dee!
[EMCEE (spoken)] Thank you! Lulu! Bobby! And me!! Oh, I'm so hot now! Come, my Lieblings, upstairs!
As they ran off stage he caught a glimpse of a small child in the back of the club and frowned, the next act was running on stage so he had plenty of time to find out how the hell it got in there.
He threw on his shimmering robe and came out in to the floor greeting those who he passed, and finally ending up at the table "Hello young lady..."

Eli both knew and didn't know what the song was referring to. As old as she was, it wasn't quite possible for her not to know, and yet, at the same time, she couldn't possibly have known the specifics of what they were referring to, not enough to make that intellectual knowledge emotional, or make her blush. The antics of the people on stage only brought to mind more interesting or complex things she was familiar with - hide and seek, for example. Or maybe just hiding. One of the ladies was not a lady; she was most interested in him, not paying a lot of attention to what the other characters were doing. She wondered why he was pretending to be. She did not suppose it was because he had to.
Eli had waved away anyone who seemed to glance her way, but when one of the performers, painted from head to toe, it looked like, to make him even whiter, looked like he was very purposefully heading towards her, her shoulders hunched slightly as though she would have liked to dart under the table right then.
She did not, however. Eli did not turn and run away from people. Although she still seemed very tense, she only said in response, "Hello." She spoke in German instead of French, in case that would appease.

The Emcee smiled "Ahh Guten Abend" he replied "you seem a little, young to be here. This is a night club, how did you get in?" He replied in German as well.

Eli smiled. It was a perfectly normal smile, so far as all her teeth were concerned, but the level of maturity in it might have been a little unsettling. She did not try in any other way to be intimidating, however. It wouldn't have occurred to her. "I walked in."

"Of course you did" he smiled and sat down, it wasn't hard for The Emcee to be nice, it was however hard for him to not seem either A. Terrible sexy while doing it or B. Unnerving and creepy. It all depended on the subject before him.
"Are you having a good time then?"

Eli could smell the paint on his face, on his mouth, making it unnaturally red, and though he moved in a very fluid way, and there seemed something about him that was itself almost childlike, it never occurred to him to think he was attractive. Eli kept smiling, but shrank back from him just slightly nonetheless, and nodded.
"Yes. I like the music."
She didn't want him to think she did not appreciate it. That had been why she'd come. And then, almost hesitantly, she spoke out - "And the vampires."
That had been the other reason. Maybe he would suppose she was simply a silly child who had heard too many rumors and snuck in.

"Ahhh" he nodded, he had seen a lot of strange things, but a child, a shoeless child that came in to a nightclub looking for vampires, well there was only one reasonable explanation that came to his mind "than am I to imagine that you are too, a vampire?"
He reached across and graced her hand, in the least intimidating way that he could, not that he cared either way.

Eli's fingers tightened a little, but she didn't pull away, nor did she seem especially strained.
"Is that what you imagine?"
Despite the pitch of the voice and the purity of it, the very tiny, featherweight of a pretty child it seemed to come from, it was very mature diction.
