Marianne sucked in a breath of surprise and dismay. "I..." she struggled to find the right words. She had been coming to terms with the situation - in fact, was learning to live with it quite nicely, accepting Raoul's frequent absences in exchange for his affectionate moods. "I'm young, but I'm no fool. I know my marriage is far from perfect, but it's better than many other girls will have. I... I must consider myself lucky. Besides, Raoul is a good man - in his own unusual way." She smiled weakly.

"Even what starts as a dream can end in a nightmare..." *said Madame Giry in a low voice, fighting back her own memories of the past fifteen years and the hellish torment of her marriage.* "I fear greatly for what your marriage may become if you have such jaded expectations in the beginning..." *She tried to summon a comforting smile.* "There are times, and there are men, which would make a woman wish she were an old maid or a widow. Marianne, I would hate to see you--" *she broke off and began her sentance again in a calmer tone.* "If there ever comes a time where you wish the deed undone...you may come to me, at any moment. There are options--I never knew what until recently." *She squeezed Marianne's cold hands in her own.* "I would not have you feel trapped into anything that gives you pain, my dear."

((It's not like I'm hitting on her. I'm being the worried motherly influence saying "it's not too late to get a divorce." and "are you sure you want to have this psycho's babies?"))

Marianne's expression was a mixture of emotions. "Oh, Madame, I..." she glanced around, as if the walls had ears and were listening in on her confessions. "Sometimes I am so sure that Raoul's good moods are worth the knowledge that he is unfaithful. He can be so sweet, you know..." she trailed off, and toyed with her wedding ring without realizing it.
Suddenly, her words tumbled out unchecked. "Madame, I believe I may be... expecting."

*Madame Giry raised a hand to her mouth and her eyes widened, but she said nothing and made no outward sign of her dismay.* "To bring a child into that--" *she shook her head.* "My congratulations to you both, then..." *she said solemnly, holding Marianne's hands for a moment longer before she dropped them.* "I trust you will be quitting the corps de ballet, then?"

"I am not sure of it yet," Marianne confessed, her words coming hastily. She had not spoken of this to anyone before now. "And I assure you, if there is a child, I will be returning to the ballet after a suitable period of time. After my recent neglect of my dancing, I know now how much it means to me and could not bear to cease again."

*Madame Giry's tone was quiet.* "My dear, when I said you would be leaving us, I meant for all time."

Marianne drew herself up. "Are you suggesting that you want me to leave?" Her words were accusing and overly defensive, as if to try to cover up the hurt and unhappiness that lay beneath.

"I am suggesting nothing--I am saying that if you are carrying a child, it will be so." *Madame Giry walked back to the window.* "It has been against my better judgement to keep you on as a ballerina after your marriage, and a testament to your talent that you have lasted thus far." *She turned to Marianne with a pitying look.* "You should have known your days at the Opera were numbered when you became a wife." *She turned her face away.* "It is impossible to strike a balance. It is the one or the other--and you have already chosen your future."

Marianne's expression was one of utter horror. "If I have a child, I cannot dance anymore?" The thought had not even occured to her. "Even if I recover well from the birth?"

"It is not seemly for a lady of your station, Madame," *said Madame Giry, her patience wearing thin and her temper flaring slightly.* "Do you not understand that your career as a dancer was over the moment you bound yourself to that man?" *Her voice rose and her eyes flashed darkly.* "Once you are a mother there is no turning back and you will never dance in this Opera again. You will have your family to think of."

"I... I have to go," Marianne whispered, her eyes filling with tears. Blindly, she turned and fled.
