*half moans, half sighs to herself as she curls up on the dryest rock she could find overlooking the inky black lake*
I hate having to go away every month. Why do I have to be this way? Why can't I just be NORMAL?

*Alex had taken a wrong turn on her way back to the dorms. But she was a lighthearted sort, and a trip through the "haunted" basement of the opera wasn't enough to dampen her spirits. So it was that she came to the shore of the fabled lake. It was eerily beautiful; she'd never seen it before, though she'd heard tell of it.
A muffled sob informed her she was not alone. She peered into the darkness, saw a dark shape huddled on a rock, and stepped towards it.*
"Are you all right?" *she asked tentatively.*

*jumps and gasps, huddling lower to the ground*
How did he find me? God, why can't I just deal with my problems on my own?
*chokes back a sob as she attempts to speak* I'm--I'm fine. Just thinking.

*Alex squinted, detecting a hint of what looked like a furry tuft of an ear. And the voice seemed familiar.*
"Sorry to disturb you. Not sure it's safe down here, though. For young... women. Can I help?"

*clearly sees Alex squinting to make out her form (because, you know, Jellicles can and Jellicles do see in the dark) and stands to move further away hurriedly* I'm fine, it's perfectly safe down here. You don't have to worry about me, monsieur, I'm just relaxing-- *steps backward as she speaks and catches her heel on a protrusion of rock* WAAAAHHHH!! *gives a great shriek and tumbles over the side of the outcropping she was standing on and into the lake*

*Without stopping to think, Alex ripped off her coat and dove in after the girl. Her hands reached out to grasp something... furry. As her head broke the surface of the lake, she beamed at Bonnie-Marie.*
"It's you!"

*moans loudly and tries to turn away, covering her face with her paw-hands*
Oh please, just forget you ever saw me and go away! I don't want to cause any problems, I don't want people to know, I just want it to be over so I can pretend to be normal again! Please, don't look at me, monsieur.
*climbs awkwardly back up onto the shore, sopping wet and quite pathetic-looking, assuming you can actually see her through the darkness.*

*Alex followed her out. Her eyes had adjusted quite well, and she peered at Bonnie-Marie through a curtain of dripping auburn hair. The other girl looked like nothing so much as a very unhappy ally-cat without a crate to shelter her from the rain. Alex had not known that women came in such a form, but she was delighted. So sleek! So feminine! So... Well, her fur did smell a little, when it was wet. But that was a minor point.*
"Here. You must be cold." *She settled her jacket around the cat-girl's shoulders.* "Please don't be upset. I'm sorry I frightened you. Would it help to hear a secret about me? A very big one?"

*begins to shrug off the coat but decides against it; it was warming her up quickly*
Don't try to make this better, monsieur, there is no way you can. Even the darkest secret couldn't rival this!
*moans again, somewhat overdramatically (even for this situation), and hides her face in her paws again*

*Alex frowned, not certain how to reassure the creature. She cocked her head. At least she wasn't running away. And she hadn't removed the coat.*
"I'm a girl," *she said bluntly.* "Alexandra, to put a name to it. Been going as Alex ever since I got here; got a job singing tenor because girls can only wear trousers onstage. I'm not saying it's anywhere near as dramatic as yours, but we've both got secrets, haven't we? And if I'm to understand it only happens once a month, well, it seems to me you're not much worse off than any of us girls. Periodically speaking, that is."
*She fished in her pocket for her handkerchief, which came up soaking wet. But her flask was also in her pocket.*
"Here. Good Irish whiskey; warm you in no time."

*takes the flask and holds it, but does not drink*
You're a...girl?
*blinks and cocks her head at Alex, momentarily forgetting to be horrified by her own appearance and ill-fortune*
No you're not. I would have noticed before if you were a girl.

*Alex grinned and shook her head.*
"See, everyone says that, but do you know how many times someone's asked me if I was a girl? None," *she rattled on, not letting Bonnie-Marie guess.* "The power of first impressions. But if you don't believe me, then here--"
*She reached out to grab Bonnie-Marie's hand, which she guided to her own breast. Her binding had gotten rather loose in the daring water rescue.*
"What's that, then?"

*gasps and pulls her hand away, jumping up indignantly*
What on earth do you think you're doing?
*waves the flask at Alex, looking very much as if she's preparing to throw it*
How DARE you make me touch your--oh. You ARE a girl. Goodness.
*blinks at her companion dazedly, then suddenly snaps back to angry*
Well, that's still no excuse for what you did! If I wanted to touch your...*whispers* breast...I would have done it on my own.

"Was it so awful, then?" *she said.* "I know girls what would kill for breasts like mine! And don't spill the whiskey; that comes out of my opera salary, you know."

I don't care.
*raises the flask to throw it to the ground, but wusses out and drops her arm weakly back down before shoving the whiskey back at Alex*
And you have no right to be upset because I didn't want to touch you, I'm the one who should be upset. I mean, I AM upset.
*crosses her arms over her chest to demonstrate this fact*
