*Erik nearly choked on his laugh.*
"No," *he said, nearly gleefully.*
XIV
"Um..." *began Shadi badly.* "Is it decorative?"
*Erik shook his head, not trusting his voice.*

Peter resisted the urge to glance over his shoulder to look for tinkerbell. Peter made a show of thinking it out. "do you find it in a kitchen?"

((This reminds me of the Mad Magazine satire of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: "You mean the most evil man in the world plays stupid word games?!"))

*Erik schooled himself fiercely, to keep the frown from his voice.*
"Yes," *he said reluctantly.*

Peter smiled slightly and leaned over and rested on his fist to think. "okay... is it used for cooking?"

((You'd think that River, being a psychic wonderchild and all, would be good at this game, but since her author is a ditz........))
*River felt that Peter had some kind of plan and stared at the direction that the small light had flown off to.*

((That is why Erik is marking the number on the wall.))
*Erik's good humor, such as it was, recovered.*
"No."
XVII
"Three left," *he said unnecessarily.*

Peter glanced around trying to get ideas. "is it used for storage?"

Peter nodded and pulled out his dagger and startted playing with it. Peter ran his hand over the blade thinking. "is it a cabinet?"

*Erik shook his head. He was going to win! He would win the game, and then... And then what? He wasn't sure. Was he supposed to kill them if he won? Or if they did? Oh well--if he wanted to he'd kill them anyway. Promises were for fools to keep.*

"One left," *he said.*

*Shadi started up suddenly.*
"Oh my god," *she said.* "It's a breadbox, isn't it?"
*Erik seemed to visibly crumple.*
"I was right!" *Shadi crowed.* "I can't believe you--that is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. You're the Phantom? The big ghost? And all you've got is breadbox?"
*Erik regained his height.*
"You almost didn't win," *he said, almost succeeding in keeping the plaintive note from his voice.* "But it doesn't matter. I'm not one for adhering to deals."

Peter smiled slightly as Shadi got it. as Erik stood back up Peter matched him with his fist firmly on his hips. "we won, are you going to keep your promise or are you not man enough to?"

*Erik laughed suddenly, surprising even himself. It was the idiot-boy's foolish pose, mimicking his own, that did it. The boy was nearly half his height, but braver than a cornered rat. The girls, too, showed no fear, even when they should. They were stupid, but it was the kind of stupidity he met far too little--the kind that was foolhardy rather than merely cowardly.
The daroga had it in spades. And the line seemed to have continued strong. He laughed again, the unfamiliar sound echoing oddly off surprised walls.*
