*Tessa stood on the roof, the breeze lightly blowing her long dark hair back from her face.* I will still be your avenging angel, father. *She pulled her lace shawl tighter around her shoulders, feeling suddenly cold.*

"You know, you'll catch a chill up here," Marianne called as she crossed the rooftop, buttoning up her own jacket.

*Tessa whirled around to see a redhaired woman standing close by.* "I don't much mind the cold, and I won't be out here for long."

Marianne came to stand beside her, tendrils of red curls blowing about her face. "Only someone with a weight on their shoulders would stand and subject themselves to the elements," she offered philisophically.

"Oh! If that's the case, I definitely shouldn't be up here. A girl like me doesn't have many concerns beyond seeing that her hair and dress look well all the time. Indeed, this wind can't be doing wonders for my coiffure," *Tessa trilled a laugh, reverting back to her usual spoiled princess facade.* "I just wanted to see what the city looked like from up here."

"It is gorgeous, isn't it?" Marianne replied, gazing out over the vista. It was early dusk, twilight just beginning to creep over the city, the twinkling lights glowing in the coming darkness. She could see the tips of the towers of Notre-Dame cathedral in the distance.

*Tessa turned with a gasp.* "Oh! Forgive my rudeness, signora, my name is Tessa. Tessa Alvarado."

Marianne extended her hand courteously. "Pleased to meet you. I'm Marianne, Marianne de Chagny."

*Tessa shook her hand firmly.* "The name sounds familiar. Have we met before?"

Marianne frowned, then shook her head. "I don't think so. Perhaps you've heard of my husband, the Vicomte Raoul de Chagny - he's the patron of the Opera House."

"That must be it!" *said Tessa airily.* "Every one's heard of the patron."

Marianne pursed her lips and eyed Tessa suspiciously. "You're right about that..."

"Of course, I'm new around here, so I haven't met him yet. Everyone else has, though, apparently." *Tessa summoned a ditzy smile.*

Several months ago, Marianne would have blushed at the thoughts Tessa's comment brought to mind, but she merely sighed. "Yes, you've hit it right on the nail." She paused. "What have you come here for, anyway?"

"Oh, I'm just travelling through Europe for fun. Shopping in Paris is supposed to be great. I just finished at finishing school a few years ago, spent some time in the Spanish court, you know." *She shrugged.* "Stuff."
((Sorry my replies are so spazzy and far apart--I'm wrestling with some nerdy FTP client and have had to re-register for a lot of things which is driving me up the wall and putting me months behind schedule.))
