********LATER***********
Marlow would gladly have carried his Lord-sire if he thought Vicente would have permitted it. As it was, he merely kept a close watch on the ancient one until they were both footed firmly on the roof.
The rain was harder and colder so far up, but the night city was brilliantly lit, the lanes and streets lined with gaslights or lit by the windows of houses and cafes. There was so much movement--much more than Vicente would have ever seen--and every motion was captured perfectly in glittering black eyes, every human's position was noted and the best course of attack was instantly apparent to predator minds.
Marlow pointed in one direction, away from the river.
[ The house lies that way, Uram. ] he used the Elder's formal title--merely another way of saying "father" but this meaning "father to all" rather than "father to me".
[ And there are many in this city who have sprung from our pure bloodlines. Many mistakes. Much competition. But...you are still weak. We should wait to move. ]

The rain felt good after so long sheltered from nature. It looked to the people below, and retched at the thought of not being feared as It once was. Even the creature It met in the cellar, the first to see It in a century, did not tremble.
[This world has grown sick! Marlow, It truly is proud that you have survived this long without an Elder in such a horrid land. They do not fear for we have been absent so long. I am glad my awakened prematurely, my absence was to be longer, however, there is much to do. Do you know, can you tell why It awoke from It's... my slumber before the chosen time?]

Marlow nearly purred with the praise, and shook his head at the Elder's question.
[ Do not know, Father. Many Things stalk the streets here. Many things for humans and unclean children of the Strigoi to fear and cower at. Their presence is ever-increasing. Perhaps that is what woke you. ]

[Perhaps. Perhaps the Earth itself felt a need for It to cleanse her.] It laughed at the joke It thought It was telling.
[At any rate, Marlow, I am anxious. Anxious to hunt once more. And if our bastard children are truly becoming such a nusaince as you say they are, they must be dealt with as well. Yes, It thinks perhaps we should start tonight, It believes It may be strong enough.]

The younger creature hissed in displeasure.
"You could barely scale to the roof, Master! Would it not be more wise to wait? I will bring you prey until you are to your full strength."

[It want's to hunt, It does not want to be fed!]
After the outburst, It calmed down, and met Marlow in French.
"If you think it is for the best, Marlow, then It shall heed your advice. You have been good to It... to me, Marlow. I trust you led well in my absence."

((Prepare for artistic lic.!))
He nodded eagerly and grinned around his sadly flat, human teeth.
"I have tried! Only...Balsiel...I could not control her. She would not stop taking human pets--would not stop making false children. I had to destroy her, Father, though it grieved me to do so."
His voice grew a bit hoarse, but only a bit. "I have not led well, Uram. There are now only seven of the ancients left."

Vicente was visibly wounded by this revelation, but recovered quickly, hoping Marlow wouldn't take notice. It ran a long, dirty fingernail down Marlow's cheek.
[The seven that remain? They are true to the old ways? They are true to their Elder?]

His eyes slid closed and he leaned into the sharp touch.
[ They are eager for your return, Uram. But afraid. The humans have become wise; Not as wise as they were during the Purge, we are not actively hunted, but they are aware of our misbegotten children, if not us directly. ]

Upon hearing the bastards exposed them, Vicente's nail tore flesh from Marlow's cheek.
[It will make the strigoi proud, Marlow. Together, we will crush those who stain our legend. If they wish to live like humans, they will die like humans.]

He hissed and jerked his head back, bringing up his own human-like hand to his face and pulling away his fingers dark red before dropping his arm to his side again.
"We would prefer to feed, Father...our hunger gnaws, it eats our minds--you have not given us leave to feed for a century--Balsiel defied you, Master, but we were all tempted."
This line of thinking, of course, would sow the seeds which would bring disaster to the small clan of elders in just over another century, destroying them utterly in the unforgiving dark of a small arctic town.

"The others may feed in time, Marlow. We shall hunt soon. For now, what is it that you have to teach so It may remain undetected?"

The Strigoi gave a whine.
"You must be 'you' 'me' 'he', Master. Your speech is archaic. The house is prepared--there is room for you and for I for now. I will make arrangements for the others. I have not engaged any servants, they cannot keep quiet."
Marlow backed up a step, his master would not like this next.
"Uram, you must not command attention. Humans do not duel in the streets for respect any longer, the arrogant draw too much attention."

Vicente clenched It's fists, but spoke calmly.
"You intend to keep my docile, Marlow? Perhaps I should be locked in a cage?"
