"Please no," he said, mollified.

"I understand, it doesn't work for everyone. I was about your age before I even considered it.”

Adrien made a face.
"You know how I managed to graduate?"

"I can infer as much," Veidt said darkly.

Adrien made a little affronted noise in the back of his throat.
"I didn't graduate."
Lips pressed together in a bit of a pout, his expression softened into something sheepish and teasing at the same time.
"Though how I was passing Eenglish before I dropped out..."

Veidt pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Well, no matter what you might have heard about me, that's not how I intend to handle things around here. I'd like..."
He leaned back in his seat as he trailed off and thought over what he wanted to say.
"The body," he began, "is a very temporal prison. All spiritual matters aside- if those can even be considered universal to begin with- it's... rather futile to expect to be able to rely on it forever. I mean, look at me-"
He gestured first at himself, and then at the surrounding office.
"Heaven knows I'm getting older to begin with myself. I've already had to make a massive adjustment in my approach to how I make my way through the world."

"Are you giving me a lecture on how I can't use sex to get ahead for the rest of my life? Chief, honey," said Adrien, adjusting his posture only slightly. "I know all that. But I'm not as old as you are yet. I have a few more years, okay?"

"I know- God knows I know," he said, smiling a little wryly now. "But you would be amazed at how quickly it catches up with you. You wake up one morning, thirty-five years old and wondering what you've really done."

"That's just the nightlife talking. Man like you, doesn't go to Studio 54 anymore, he shouldn't have mornings like that any longer."
Adrien, with his arm propped up on his knee, gesturing elegantly and authoritatively with his hand, looked like he was ready to lecture Veidt.

Veidt laughed.
"I assume you've seen the photos, then."

"Everyone's seen the photos."
He glanced around the office.
"And then some."

"I mean the... ah. Centerfold photos, specifically. That is to say- Adrien, I don't-"
He had to remove the glasses altogether this time to rub the bridge of his nose properly.
"I'm not judging you, if that's what you're afraid of."

"No more than you judge everyone else for being mundane and boring next to you, I know."
