"Yeah," she said, dubiously. He seemed to be working hard to convince her of this, rather than baffled that she'd asked. It was as though he had anticipated being asked. Which there seemed to be no reason to be. "You have really seen it, I suppose? You aren't just saying so."

Ashton seemed to have to take a moment to process this, and ultimately waved it off, looking perturbed.
“Is... Is the coffee thing that noticeable?” he asked, leaning forward and lowering his voice.

"-oh," said Ashton.
There was a short pause, and then his hands clapped down on the table. He pushed himself away from her, his left hand rising from the tabletop again, cupping the air-
Then he lowered it again, just as abruptly.
"Stupid," he muttered. "Stupid, stupid-"
Ashton folded his arms tightly, as though restraining his own hands. He couldn't look at her.
“Damn you. Damn you-“
One of his hands thrust back out to point at her accusingly.
“I ought to make you forget that-“

Teja stood abruptly, the chair making an agonizing sound as it groaned across the floor.
"You know? I think Megan probably misses me," she said, scurrying away and out of the café before this madman had the opportunity to grab her.
