“It would seem I did,” he teased. “Do you want my coat?”

"Are you trying to put a coat on my back, or a target?" she countered. Knew she shouldn't, really, but she couldn't help but enjoy bantering with him.

"It's cold out there," he said. "It's probably harder on you than on me."
He slid his jacket off and held it out to her, eyebrows popping up just a little higher as he did so. (They seemed to be good at that.)

It was disconcertingly warm, and it dwarfed her. He was right; it was cold. She shrugged it on, shyness returning, and she watched him in the dimmer lightning. His eyes, an unremarkable shade of blue, were hit by a beam of light in the otherwise greater shadows out here; it made them suddenly intense.
"Really are shaping up to be quite the politician, offering a lady your coat and all. I wonder what you're like in the dark," she said, needlessly cynical.

"Worthy, I hope," he said, in a vague, distracted voice as he pushed the door open and held it for her. It seemed to move too quickly, and he peered around it just in time to see one of the Plaza's uniformed doormen holding it from the other side. Ashton's smile tightened with embarrassment, and he let go of the door to gesture for Teja to step out first.

She did so daintily.
"We'll see," she murmured.

Outside was bracingly cold, but Ashton seemed unbothered by it in his shirtsleeves as he helped Teja down the front steps, which threatened to be icy this time of year,
"Where to? The park?"
(The park presently appeared to be a jagged thatch of dark trees illuminated by the weak, pale light of the lampposts installed on the path beyond the street.)
"Bergdorff's? Observe the ruling classes of this place in their natural habitat and take field notes? Coffee?"

"Taking me this far away and you didn't let me bring my own coat? All that said, I'd love a tea."

Ashton mouthed "tea?" a few times.
"That's the one with the.. er, leaves, yes? And coffee is the beans-“

"Did you grow up in a cult?"
It occurred to her after she said it that if the answer was not far from the mark - she couldn't think of anything but some kind of cultishly withdrawn, 'sheltered' homelife that would lead a twenty-something young man to not know what tea and coffee were - that wasn't really something she needed to be throwing in his face.
"- sorry. That was rude. Yes, tea is leaves."
Though it did raise uncomfortable questions in her mind about how fit he would be for politics.

"Right," Ashton said, nodding. He pulled a small notebook from his pocket, or at least it seemed to have come from his pants pocket, and scribbled something down with a pen that had probably come from the same place, with a little noise of satisfaction, and tucked it away again.
"Sorry- just. You know, making a list of things to look up later. Carry on."

"Really don't know what tea and coffee are, though?"

"Actually, that one was for 'cult'," he said, looking ahead."Oh, look- traffic light's changed-"
