"Oh, that's never really been his problem," Megan said- blurted, really. "He's..."
She sighed and leaned against the sink.
"It's not an act. He's... alarmingly sincere, it's almost frightening sometimes. Everything he says, he means."

"Hm," said Teja.

"Hm what?"

She gave her a slightly annoyed and very quick look.
"Hm I just met him, is all. Anyway, it's not like I'll ever see your boss again."

"You might- you are my friend, after all. If you’re not careful and he finds out you can sing too he might start pulling you in for that.”

Teja was baffled and more than a little pink.
"I don't know what that means - and anyway, I don't sing well."
It only struck her belatedly that she had been cunningly manoevered into changing the subject.

"He's been building another hand- one he can move like his real hand- but he doesn't want to use it until it's possible to mass-produce it for everyone, and make it affordable," Megan said, in a lower voice now. "But he tests it sometimes- he types with it, sees how it responds, you know, and-"
She turned a little pink and brushed a lock of hair behind her own ear.
"Well, one evening last month, only a few weeks after- everything, you know- he was working late, so I was working late, and I was handling some scheduling calls when he asked if I could come with him once I'd finished. I did, and he- well, he asked me how familiar I was with Weill- you know, Kurt Weill, the composer? And I said I only knew a little bit of Threepenny and a little of Happy End, and after that it's just 'O Moon of Alabama'- well, anyway."
She stepped aside to take the conversation away from the sinks and into the ladies' lounge, where they could sit together for a moment.
"Anyway, he said that was fine, and he took me off to the- there's a piano in the balcony of the lobby. He pays people to play it during the day instead of having music piped in. He... he wanted me to sing while he played, with the new hand."
Megan hugged herself a little, though it wasn't cold.
"It was the Solomon-Song that time. Do you know that one? 'How fortunate the man with none'- no wisdom, or courage, or honesty, depending on the verse."

"Hmm, I think he'll be satisfied with you for that," said Teja.
If they weren't sleeping together, they probably would be soon. Was Megan just ignorant of what that implied? Although Veidt had only just gotten out of a serious relationship. Maybe he was trying to go slowly. Still, she had felt ignored beside Megan in public settings before, she didn't think she was completely ignorant of male attention.

"He's not even a very good pianist," Megan blurted, with a faint laugh. "I mean- he's very precise, the new hand is miraculous, but it's... I thought it was a trick at first. I thought it was a player piano. It sounded like a machine- like the kind you find in old restaurants sometimes, where you put in a coin and it plays 'New York, New York'."
She smiled thinly.
"But I think he's a very sincere machine."

The picture forming in her mind was an eerie one. Slightly sepia-toned.
"Well-matched in Ashton, I think," said Teja, dabbing a transparent mattifying powder on her t-zone. "I talked to him about politics while he was dancing. He's very daddy love me, I sort of think."

"Does Ashton also like to lurk around playing theater organs after everyone else has gone home, do you think?" Megan said dryly. "No, that was unkind of me, I'm sorry."
She leaned back on her little floral-patterned pouf of a chair and crossed one leg over the other.
"You know," she pointed out. "If you're trying to get Adrian to wag Ashton, you'll probably be seeing more of Adrian that way too."

Teja could feel the flush suffusing her face. "I might not have been so frank to him if I had known you were going to let me near him again."
