"You said your name was Loki and people heard you!"

"Look, Loki, if you want to go about saving others- I can't stop you, and it would be hypocritical of me to suggest you shouldn't," Adrian said, a bit more gently now. "But you're going to have to be subtler about it, or what happened down there is going to become more and more a fact of life."

"Jesus- I said my name was Loki because I didn't think anyone would believe it was actually Loki," Loki sputtered unhappily. "Do you know what people said when they learned who I was? 'Are you sure? I thought you would be ginger.' Everyone thought I was the bloody satin-"

"Satan," said Adrian, "and there's no the unless you're saying 'the devil', or are speaking in a fairly specific sense referring to the general concept of the heavenly accuser in Hebrew-“

"Oh, whatever," Loki said fiercely. "Everyone here's got false names, Ozymandias-"
He picked up one of the little purple-clad figures and shook it at Adrian, then let his arm drop again.
"How was I to know this would happen? How was I to know any of this would happen? It was a taunt, all right? A sign-off."

Adrian unlocked his right hand again and set the figure in its palm, then pressed the molded hair piece over it. With the side carved off and the painted placeholder scalp showing on the figure's head, it actually did resemble Loki's half-shaven head after all. Adrian held up the figure to study it in comparison to Loki himself, and his lips parted slightly.

Loki looked away, still moody.

Adrian folded the knife and set it aside, along with the figure.
“I won’t pretend I don’t admire your intentions,” he commented. “It’s- well, to tell you the truth, it’s more than I ever expected of you. You’ve developed quite the sense of altruism.”

“Eh,” said Loki, with a little roll of one shoulder.

“I don’t want to have an argument like this in front of Teja,” Adrian continued, “so I’ll cut to the chase. I’m not telling you to stop, I’m telling you to try to... perhaps hold off on anything that could be seen as too godly.”

“I’ll keep that in mind the next time I’m prevailed upon to ensure the continued existence of your face,” Loki said, giving him an angry sidelong look.

“And not a day goes by I wish you hadn’t,” Adrian said as he pushed himself back into a standing position.

Loki startled, though he concealed it well, and slowly turned to look at Adrian with a faint squint of befuddlement.
“Don’t be stupid,” he said. “The vampire mutilated you.”

Teja had listened intently to their conversation; the way Adrian was speaking to him seemed new, and for Loki to be arguing - however rashly - from a place of maturity was very new to him. It took her a bit to realize what she was feeling was pride, in both of them.
This feeling disappeared without her remembering she'd had it in the first place and was replaced with slack-jawed shock at what Adrian was saying.
"Adrian," she said incredulously.

“The implications of that would be catastrophic if they got out,” said Adrian. “If they learn you can heal like that, they will never let you stop.”
