"Can you two stop?" she pleaded bewilderingly. "Let's just vow to get along for one night, at least?"

“Oh, darling, you know I’d do anything for you,” he said, touching her cheek again. Glancing back at Veidt, however, he smiled in a distinctly vulpine manner and added, “I’ll behave if Adrian does.”

"Adrian always behaves," she countered primly, missing the look Loki was giving him. "You're the one that was aimed at and you know it."

“Oh, I’m sure he’s very good at following orders,” Loki responded in a mild tone.

Adrian’s eyes widened for a moment.
“Right,” he said vaguely.

Loki opened his mouth, but a fourth voice cut in from a few feet away- bright, feminine, brittle with excitement as she called out Loki’s name.
The owner of the voice hurried over- an ordinary-looking, slightly dumpy white woman of about 35, dressed in a blue pantsuit, with teased-out reddish-brown hair. Loki looked at Adrian in mild confusion as the woman repeated, “Loki? You are him, aren’t you?”
Loki looked back at Adrian again.
“...yes,” he said vaguely.

Adrian cleared his throat.
“Loki, Teja, this is Edith Collier, from cosmetics marketing. Edith, this is-“ “I know who you are,” Edith said, eyes wide. “You’re Loki. My daughter, Tiffany- she was at the museum the night you fought the parasite.”

Loki grimaced.
“Ah. Well, I hope she’s-“ “She got a special pass to cover it for her school paper. She was picked for that gala,” Edith said fervently. “Fourteen years old, and she was there.”
Loki took an instinctive step backward from her, but Edith put her hands on his shoulders and looked him firmly in the eye.
“My little girl is alive because of you,” she said, eyes brimming over with tears. “I can’t thank you enough, you and Captain America-“
She hugged him abruptly, causing Loki to sputter and look a little helplessly at Adrian, but Edith released him before he could signal Adrian to call her off. She looked at him with wet eyes and a melting, shaky sort of smile, then frowned a little.
“What happened to your hair? Did someone hurt you?” “Ahem,” said Loki, holding up an index finger and smiling more than he really felt like, already sick of this topic. He wagged the finger. “Ah-ah. No, I’m quite fine. Just a haircut.” “Oh,” said Edith, who really didn’t seem to get it at all.
Loki put swung both hands behind his back and looked to Adrian for pointers; Adrian gestured for Loki to lift his chin. Edith laughed suddenly.
“What a silly question- I forgot. You’re invincible!” “Well, not fully,” Loki said agreeably, “but functionally-“ “Close enough, anyway,” said Edith. “Close enough to take care of all these problems we’ve been dealing with around here, anyway.”
Loki’s grin froze in place. The glancing back and forth he did after that bore a remarkable resemblance to a novelty cat clock.
“...one can only hope,” he said finally. “Because, I mean, Doctor Manhattan, he stomped all over us and walked out,” Edith continued. “You wouldn’t do that. You’re better than he is-“

“He’s got better hair, at any rate,” Adrian cut in. Edith looked back at him in surprise, and then laughed as the tension left the moment like air from a whoopee cushion.
“Well,” she said, “what can you do there? I’m sorry, you guys were all having a good little conversation over here and then here I came-“

“It’s flattering. I’m flattered,” Loki said, well and truly done with this topic. “Well, a happy holiday to you and yours.” “You too,” said Edith, with a cursory gesture to include Teja in this. “Though let us know when you want your festival- I think me and a few gals at your temple might be able to whip something up-“ “My temple,” Loki repeated. “Well, that’s what we’re nicknaming it, anyway. Little prayer circle. Of course, you know all about that already!”
She punctuated this with a little prod at his sternum and a laugh, before waving goodbye and melting back into the crowd.
Loki stared after her, and then just stared.
“I don’t even think I’m the right Loki for that,” he said vaguely.

Teja said nothing. Her expression said, 'Haha what the fuuuuuck.'

Adrian was smiling in a way that only came off light and pleasant if you didn't know him very well.
"I'll, er, talk to Edith when I have a chance," he said finally. "Do you suppose I could borrow the pair of you for a moment?"

Teja shot him a flat look.
"If Loki doesn't object," she said. The double entendre was only audible if you knew her.

"Not for anything that exciting, I'm afraid. Loki, have you got a knife I can borrow-"

"First order of business, duh," Loki said as they started walking. He reached into the lining of his jacket, with an audible rummaging sound. "Second order, really not selling the 'not like that', if that's what you're after."
