"It can't be any good for you? Not like you do it, which is a lot, and hiding in your room."

"Look, it doesn't matter, okay? I'll live."

He frowned.
"I mean - yes? Unhappily? And, often I have noticed you do this-" he said this very delicately. "- sometimes you will think the source of that happiness is in somebody else, and then you will be sort of.... scary with them."

"Not anymore," she said unhappily. "I learned my lesson."

"And so did I," said Thor, a little pointedly, shooting her a heavy look as he paused at a red light.
And then, a beat later, he added, "With Loki."

She gave him a withering look.
"Yeah, well, not all of us have access to WMDs when we're having a bad case of self-loathing. Or would even want to-"

"Loki may have tried to destroy an entire race of people, but he also broke my heart," said Thor solemnly, and sincerely.

Megan stared at him for a moment, then blinked a couple of tears away as she turned her head.
"Well," she said, "the easy way out of that is to not care anymore."

"Why would you want to-"

"Want to what?"

"Not care! Caring is the - fun part of living. It all feels like a chore unless you care about it -"
He made a gesture with one arm and hand not on the steering wheel like he was trying to hold a large grocery bag in the arm but clenching it closer to his body in vein because it was spilling out onto the ground anyway, which was tidily similar to how he felt trying to explain this to someone who did not apparently already know it.

“It’s not that I don’t want to,” Megan said exasperatedly. “I haven’t figured out how to not care to begin with, but it just- it feels like- like... like if you don’t, then nobody can hurt you.”
She leaned on the armrest of the car door, looking at the paper cutouts of rosy-cheeked children in blue and white spinning dreidels that were taped up in the window of the deli they were stopped outside.
"And the thing is, I do anyway. And I'm going to get hurt again. I'm doing so much better than I was even a month ago, though, so really, you don't need to worry. We don't even know each other well enough for that."

Thor was leaning around to get a better look at that deli, and then he lifted his hand to gesture at it.
"Do we have time to stop here?"

She blinked.
"Yeah, if you want? It's a kosher deli, so you won't be able to get ham or cheese, and I know you like those, but if you want-"

"Then here is what I propose: you make the order for me and for yourself, and I will pay for them both."
