He gave a brief recap of a 15-year criminal education. It didn't mention Fish by name and in fact gave the impression she was a large, respectable man who wore hats and had people whacked.

Oswald drew an X in front of his throat with a finger.

Killing her too probably wasn't an option, and Oswald hadn't even met her, so it was difficult to summon up the stomach for it.
"An exclusive contract to my services in exchange for reasonable material support. Would you like to arrange an assassination, or is a humiliating fall from grace all right?"

It wasn't champagne exactly, but he needed every particle of fortification available to him. After the deal was sealed he could get hammered at his leisure and take a nap; it wouldn't take much.
"Oh, on special occasions. She's always been a sentimental person." Oswald waved a neat hand in an approximation of a toast. On weekdays Oswald's mother drank gimlets, or anything that came in a pretty bottle.
