"That's a rather belated question," Johannes said dryly, lifting his brows.

"Well, would you? It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, sir."

"Oh no, no business. Oswald Cobblepot, at your service."
Which handily answered both who he was and what he meant to do. He didn't risk offering him a hand to shake, but he did give a barely-perceptible bow, smiling with a mouthful of small sharp teeth.

Krolock repeated the name with a distracted frown, shifting the emphasis and altering the vowels very slightly, until faint recognition dawned over his face.
"I might have expected this, coming here. How long ago did the family leave? I haven't paid much attention since the, er, esteemed comrades and I struck our little tax bargain."

Oswald blinked rapidly, but demurely.
"In '52. My mother always said it was a beautiful country. Such a shame. What a lovely woman. When I heard you were in New York, I knew I had to pay my respects-- we wouldn't be where we are now without your influence."

"I very much doubt you have one," Krolock said flatly.

(He did; it was significantly water-damaged, however.)
"I'll leave it on my way out. It's been my pleasure, sir." Already he was slithering away like an eel escaping a clenched fist, limp or no limp.

Krolock was back at his side to examine it, a little too swiftly for comfort but without giving any sign of making the movement to begin with. He reached into his lapel to produce a small magnifying lens on a chain and snatched up the card.
The corners of his mouth turned down.
"This is your name."

Some part of him had been expecting an audible whoosh but instead it was the kind of conspicuous grace he associated with Fish Mooney and personages of equivalent importance. It made the hair on the back of his neck go prickle.
"Why, yes. What can I say, I'm new in town." His chuckle was appropriately self-deprecating but it came from somewhere high in the throat, a prey sound.

"If you are not here for the party..." he said slowly, two spidery fingers curling down with the card still held between his knuckles.
