Johannes frowned in immediate concern.
"Herbert, don't overexcite yourself-"

Herbert gave his father an exuberant, cheeky smile.
"Who, me?"

Johannes crossed his arms, but looked terribly fond despite himself.

Herbert was out the door with vampire speed.
It was several more songs before it became apparent what he'd been up to.
Ministry's "Every Day is Halloween" had just ended when a more generic but very contemporary beat started playing, and then, nearly a minute afterward, a highly amplified organ riff began playing.
Herbert was finally playing the organ his father had gotten him to an audience, who loved it, of course. Herbert continued to riff on the organ for the length of a long song, and then he stood and bowed to everyone - then threw up the horns, which looked far more hilarious than he could ever realize. It got gusts of cheering, though, and he found his father's face and waved at him, eager for approval.

It took a moment, but Johannes's smile broadened and he began applauding.
As the crowd began to go back to its prior idle chatter, Johannes swept through them toward where Herbert stood to clap his son on the shoulder.
"Very impressive, my boy-"

"Were you pleased? I did what you told me to, vati-"

"I know. And I couldn't be happier."
He put his hand on Herbert's cheek again.
"You see? I'm not as out of touch as you think. Your father still has a few good ideas left in him..."

The part that hadn't been out of touch had been Herbert's own addition, and he was a little hurt, but trying not to ruin his father's trust in him being being a spoilt baby.
"Of course, of course- I've got to find Alex, you know; I'm sure he'll have loads of praise for me-"

"Herbert-
His hand moved to his son's forearm to prevent him from leaving.

"Vati, I can't leave him alone in a roomful of vampires! He's all fresh-"

"You wanted to keep him, didn't you?" Johannes said dryly.

"Not like THAT-" Herbert wailed, but his voice was so low it was more of a boom.

"Sssh, sh. There's no need to excite yourself."
Johannes condescended to glancing around the mirrored walls of the room to look for Alex's reflection, with a weary, good-natured glance at Herbert, but the longer he looked the more aghast his expression became.
"Herbert," he said quietly. "Where, precisely, did you find these people?"

"What? Oh, at vampire clubs, of course - you know, all the places I go-"

Johannes shut his eyes wearily.
"Herbert, my boy, I love you dearly, you realize-"
