Herbert went away nervously, glancing backward over his shoulder at him.

"Herbert, wait-"

"What?"

"I... I think it's time you had more responsibility in our family. I've underestimated you for far too long."

Herbert could hardly believe what he was hearing.
"You - you think I can?"

"I think... I can't do this alone, Herbert."
He held out his hand, beckoning him closer.

Herbert bounced - and tripped, a little - back towards his father, clasping his hand in both of his own. His expression was so hopeful it was almost sickening.

Johannes laughed and embraced him, giving Herbert a hearty pat on the back.
"You're far more knowledgeable about this world than I am, and it's time I learned to, er, swallow my pride- is that the term?"

"Yes, that's the term-" He hugged his father so hard he lifted him a little.

Johannes, thankfully, didn't need to breathe. He managed a strained chuckle.

He set his father down affectionately.
"You silly old man, it's about time-"

"I know," Johannes said as he finally touched ground again. "My boy, you are going to work wonders..."

Herbert was fluttering on the verge of hysteria. He forced himself to be calm and gently smooth his hair, which looked like prideful preening on the outside.
"Yes," he said primly. "Yes, I am."

Johannes laughed delightedly and clapped his son on the shoulder.
"I'm proud of you, lad. I half suspected you would refuse the offer-"

Herbert didn't know what his father wanted him to do, or what the offer even was of. That was all immaterial. He had been offered. Something. He was going to take it.
"Not at all, dear vati," he said, composure returning rapidly. "I think... I think I'm ready to return to the party now. And -"
He had an idea. A wonderful idea, symbolic of honoring his father's wishes and being true to himself all at once - he was sure his father would be happy.
"Goodness, I have something I must do-" he said distractedly, loudly farewelling his father and rushing back into the party.
